Salary for License Professional Mental Health Counsel range is $69,107 to $89,835 Salary for Social Worker range is $76,551 to $99,513 Salary will be adjusted upon selection. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

VA Careers - Social Work: https://youtube.com/embed/enRhz_ua_UU GS-0183-11 and GS-0185-11 Major duties: Conduct bio-psycho-social assessments, provide individual and group psychotherapy, clinical case management, and evidence-based interventions/treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds. This requires knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological), and the differential influences of the environment, society, and culture. Independently perform case finding functions and outreach, identifying and screening patients for psychosocial needs. Possess the knowledge and ability to implement treatment modalities, provide counseling and/or psychotherapy for individuals, families and groups. Must independently complete thorough psychosocial assessments to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and/or their families. The incumbent must be able to utilize this assessment in facilitating the Veteran's maximum use of treatment for attainment of the highest level of independence that is possible and practicable. Must possess a working knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures, including acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology. Assess psychiatric conditions according to the DSM-5. Perform mental health diagnostic interviews with patients referred to the general mental health clinic. Develop treatment plans in collaboration with the Veteran/family and with the interdisciplinary treatment team within established time frames. Possess the skills to offer psychosocial/therapeutic interventions and measure outcomes of interventions. Assess Veterans who present with psychiatric and psychosocial emergencies. Identify high-risk patients and provide case management and/or assessment services in compliance with the Uniform Services Handbook and VA Suicide Prevention protocols. Demonstrate ability to provide crisis intervention services, including timely and appropriate interventions to prevent harm to self or others, as well as coordination of family involvement when indicated. Consult with supervisor, psychiatrist, Suicide Prevention Coordinators and/or other team members when moderate or high risk of harm is identified. Complete suicide prevention documentation in accordance with established guidelines. Provide any necessary follow up calls for High Risk patients due to the following reasons: they lack a consistent provider, provider called off, they missed their last appointment and need contact for the measure, availability is too far out for regular provider, walk-ins. Assess for Military Sexual Trauma and link Veteran's to clinically indicated care. Demonstrate ability to provide cross-coverage for MHC triage social workers. Assign Mental Health Treatment Coordinator (MHTC) to veterans meeting criteria. Coordinate community-based services, including information and referral for additional services from other VA programs, other government programs and community agency programs. Establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families. Independently work with Veterans and families who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems utilizing individual, group and family counseling and therapy skills. Provide interventions and duties through a variety of modalities to include: face to face visits, telephone, and video modalities. Hold an understanding of cultural, age and gender diversity and adapts practice accordingly. Provide consultation services to other staff regarding the psychosocial needs of Veterans and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and adherence to treatment plan. Ability to evaluate own practice through professional peer review, case conferences and other organizational means. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. GS-0183-11: Education. Hold a master's or doctoral degree in: Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling; Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling; or a related field, from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Examples of related mental health counseling fields include, but are not limited to Addiction Counseling; Community Counseling; Gerontology Counseling; Marital, Couple, and Family Counseling. CACREP defines the date when graduates are considered to have graduated from a CACREP accredited program. Additional information may be obtained from http://www.cacrep.org/directory/. NOTE: Traditional Rehabilitation counseling programs that are accredited by CACREP do not meet the LPMHC qualification standards as Traditional Rehabilitation counseling differs from Clinical Rehabilitation counseling. GS-0185-11: Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. GS-0183-11: Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to LPMHC positions in the GS-0183 series in VHA must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor, which includes diagnosis and treatment. NOTE: It is VHA policy that a LPMHC who does not yet have a license that allows independent practice must be supervised by a licensed independent practitioner of the same discipline who is a VA staff member and who has access to the electronic health record. GS-0185-11: Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. GS-0183-11: Do you possess a minimum of at least one year of post-master's or post- doctoral degree mental health counseling experience (VA or non-VA experience) and licensed to practice at the independent practice level? In addition, you must meet the KSAs at the next lower grade level and demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Ability to make professional evaluations, decisions, and recommendation for treatment planning and implementation. 2. Advanced knowledge and mastery of the fundamentals of the counseling process which includes defining patient/family problems and maintaining an effective counseling relationship. 3. Ability to provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and trainees on the counseling process within various specialty areas, build on the foundation of competence through regular meetings and discussions to explain assignments, review progress of cases and confer about the counseling perspectives and orientation. 4. Ability to provide complex crisis intervention and stabilization to patients who are in psychological distress. Requires independent judgment and skill. 5. Ability to establish goals/treatment through a collaborative process with the patient utilizing advanced counseling skills, including evidenced- based practices, screening, and psychosocial assessment. 6. Ability to use a wide variety of individual, group, or familial counseling interventions; demonstrates sensitivity to diversity and possesses multicultural counseling skills. 7. Ability to fully utilize the current DSM in making diagnoses and formulation of treatment goals and application of appropriate clinical intervention using professional counseling practices. 8. Ability to develop and facilitate psychotherapy and psycho- education groups that include life skills, family support, and community integration. This may include evidence based psychotherapy. GS-0185-11: In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services. (b) Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. (c) Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e. acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan. (d) Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals. (e) Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment.
