This is a paid Nursing Assistant Residency where selectees will spend 40-60 percent of their duty time learning the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. As such it is expected the learner will complete all required learning assignments, to the standards both in terms of quantity and quality as defined by the learning institution in collaboration with the VA. The learner must complete all examinations with scores of 80% or greater weekly.

Duties

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) GS-03 is an entry level employee who operates under close supervision.. The CNA is responsible for providing basic nursing care to the patients assigned to her/him. Individuals assigned as a GS-3 CNA are considered to be at the entry level and are closely supervised. The CNA is responsible to and directly supervised by a professional nurse (RN/LPN). The CNA is a member of the health care team. This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. The incumbent must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments. Makes caring for the veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work. Self­ motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards. Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. Promotes the incorporation of current patient/resident care data in actively contributing to the development of the patient's overall health plan and in carrying out assigned nursing interventions. Prioritizes and organizes workload based on unit needs. Has some involvement in the development and modification of treatment plans. Makes observations of subtle changes, both physical and emotional, in patient's condition, and accurately and thoroughly documents care delivered and patient's/resident's response to care that could require immediate modification of the care plan. Appropriately seeks assistance and guidance by informing professional nurse (RN/LPN). or provider of changes in patient's condition. Recognizes and provides emotional, cultural, spiritual, socio-economic and age related factors in providing patient care. Assists providers and nurses in the care and treatment of the ill receiving medical, surgical, psychiatric, or outpatient treatment. Observes and reports to the professional nurse (RN/LPN) changes in patient behavior, attitude, bodily complaints, and appearance. Performs simple treatment procedures such as changing clean dressings; applying or removing binders, arm slings, dressing, and bandages; or applying hot and cold packs. Cleans and maintains supplies and equipment used in patient care, assists with the admission, transfer and discharge of patient, assist with preparation of patients for special procedures. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education/Experience: None beyond basic requirements. Failure to meet the quality, quantity, or academic requirements of the residency may be cause for and termination of employment. The remaining portion of duties, also 40-60% are spent applying the knowledge, skills, and abilities learned performing as a Patient Care Companion, Patient Transporter, or Patient Ambassador. Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don personal protective equipment (PPE) in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures at the bedside.
