Duties

This is a senior-level, professional position located in the Laboratories and Scientific Services Directorate (LSSD) Field Laboratories within the Operations Support Office (OS) of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This position serves as the deputy to the Laboratory Director of the field laboratory and performs a multiplicity of duties; the planning, management and direction of activities pertinent to the overall management of LSS activities of the CBP field laboratory. This position starts at a salary of $136,035.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $176,842.00 (GS-14, Step 10) with promotion potential to $176,842.00 (GS-14 Step 10). Typical Work assignments include: Planning, directing, assigning and coordinating work as a second line Supervisor to be accomplished by subordinate staff in support of the establishment of policies and programs. Managing technical and administrative activities, including forward operating facilities, and issues across internal organizational boundaries and requires communication, coordination or resolution by senior management. Developing and implementing systems, policies and programs designed to increase the productivity of the laboratory, and improve technical quality, Maintaining currency on national and international scientific and technological developments and advancements in chemistry and forensics science methodology and instrumentation.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement: A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics plus appropriate experience or additional education. You qualify for this position if you meet the basic requirement listed above and possess the experience or substitution of education, if applicable, as described below Experience: You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Providing expert technical advice to higher level CBP managers on chemical and physical testing, forensic analyses, or WMD detection; Assigning work to subordinates, monitors and evaluates employee's performance and work product; Serving as a subject matter expert on readiness of chemical analyses, physical tests, forensic analyses. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
