Duties

Typical work assignments will include: performing work designed to support the information technology help desk; assisting in the installation, configuration, and upgrading of commonly used hardware and software system; resolving recurring software/hardware problems for which precedents exists; providing user training and assistance on routine hardware, software, and internet applications; maintaining and controlling IT systems security documentation and equipment inventories; troubleshooting routine and recurring software problems; providing routine support to computer and information system users (e.g. printer errors, user problems with PC software, etc.); and providing assistance to staff members in using computer system/laptops. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Travel Required: None

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

  • You must meet half-time student enrollment requirements.
  • You must submit a transcript or proof of enrollment with your application.
  • You must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

To be eligible for this internship ALL of the following requirements must be met: Student Status: Definition of a student - applicant must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university, graduate/professional school, or certificate program equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study (go to http://www.ed.gov/accreditation to verify accreditation status) pursuant to 5 CFR 362. You must be considered in good academic standings by the school. Individuals must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational, or technical course load leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. "Half-time" is defined by the school in which the student is enrolled. Grade Point Average: You must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Citizenship: Student Interns must be United States citizens or owe permanent allegiance to the United States. (Currently, natives of American Samoa, Swains Island and certain inhabitants of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are the only groups that owe permanent allegiance to the United States.) Background Investigation: You must successfully complete a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment. Pathways Participant Agreement: All interns are required to sign the Participant Agreement. Qualification requirements as outlined below. GS-05 Level Specialized experience: To qualify for the GS-05 level applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-04). You must possess IT related experience demonstrating these four competencies: Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Oral Communication, and Problem Solving. Specialized experience includes, or was supplemented by, information technology related experience (paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training, as appropriate) which demonstrates each of the four competencies, as defined: (1) Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attention to detail. Examples of IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include completing thorough and accurate work independently, even in the most difficult or stressful situations; occasionally reviewing work completed by others. (2) Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Examples of IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include resolving routine and non-routine problems, questions, or complaints; developing and maintaining strong, mutually supportive working relationships with customers; conducting evaluation of support to determine quality of services and customer satisfaction, and recommending procedural changes based on customer need or changes in policy and/or regulation. (3) Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Examples of IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: convincingly conveying complex information to customers; presenting thoughts that are well-organized and demonstrating confidence in the facts and ideas; adjusting style when working with individuals with different levels of understanding; using various methods to explain and convey information. (4) Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. Examples of IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include solving complex or sensitive problems by developing and proposing strategic alternatives; identifying possible conflicts and shared benefits; helping teams anticipate problems and identifying and evaluating potential sources of information; providing feedback. OR Education: Completed 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in an IT related field.

Education

All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at an institution that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications.
