The Clinical Nutrition Manager is the supervisor for the clinical section of Nutrition and Food Services and directs a comprehensive nutritional care program. The Clinical Nutrition Manager is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating clinical nutrition and nutritional education programs. Supports facility mission and coordinates clinical nutrition activities with other services and units, clinics, and local community.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Able to perform all duties of subordinate clinical dietitians
Advisor to clinical staff, other allied healthcare professionals, program directors and managers
Develops, and implements nutrition therapy programs
Assists in the establishment of organizational structure guidelines, performance standards, and reporting requirements and assists in defining lines of authority and supervisory controls essential in carrying out the mission of the service
Develops strategic planning goals and objectives for the clinical program
Develops and implements nutrition care policies and guidelines for compliance with all regulatory agency requirements (i.e., TJC, AND, ASPEN) and specific VHA guidelines
Prepares and submits a variety of clinical reports
Conducts performance reviews and competency assessments
Develops and implements a Performance Improvement Program to ensure provision of high-quality nutrition care
Activities of clinical dietitians, which includes nutrition screening, assessment, monitoring, and education
Reviews electronic medical records of patients to substantiate that clinical staff meet established guidelines of care that meet the needs of patients
Responds to EEO complaints and unfair labor practice charges
Ensures that all clinical nutrition staff meet mandatory and continuing education requirements to assure maintenance of registration status
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD): Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in a direct patient care position unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to perform the duties of this position.
Education: Bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent.
Education and Supervised Practice: Completed an ACEND accredited or approved supervised practice program. Supervised practice programs are post-baccalaureate degree programs that provide supervised practice experiences which meet the eligibility requirements and accreditation standards of ACEND, formally known as CADE. Completion of a coordinated program in dietetics fulfills the requirements of a supervised practice program. Time spent in a dietetic internship or supervised practice program does not qualify as creditable experience.
Registration/Certification: Registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Advanced Level Practice Dietitians must possess a minimum of one advanced practice credential relevant to the area of practice, (e.g. Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC), Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR), Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition (CSG), Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), or Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO)).
Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.
Grade Determinations:
Experience: Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level such as:
Staff dietitian at the full performance level GS-11,
Registered dietitian responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutrition care activities (e.g., food service and/or clinical nutrition).
Registered dietitian serving as important member of the interdisciplinary team of care providers, and focus on offering exceptional nutrition care and guidance to optimize health.
Registered dietitian working in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, outpatient centers, residential treatment programs and patient homes;
Responsible for using evidence-based approaches to develop menus, counsel patients and provide nutrition care.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Ability to develop, maintain, and supervise a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies to assure compliance with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities.
Knowledge of the principles of program management and oversight required to develop program goals and objectives, administer and monitor program, evaluate program outcomes/accomplishments, set and redefine priorities, and implement effective solutions in processes and/or systems as needed.
Ability to act as a consultant for staff.
*Ability to determine the continuing education needs of staff and appropriate resources to meet those needs.
*Knowledge of human resource management principles and the ability to manage/supervise, i.e, plan, organize, delegate, direct, control, review activities of groups of subordinates.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition care and the treatment of complex cases in clinical settings in order to develop, implement, and coordinate best practices and supervise clinical nutrition staff.

Physical Requirements: The work environment involves everyday risks of discomforts, which require safety precautions typical of hospitals, offices, and meeting rooms. Work includes working closely with others. There may be occasional risk of physical harm from a violent resident that may require special precautions and training to deal with. The physical demands of the work requires light lifting under 15 lbs., light carrying under 15 lbs., the use of fingers, and both hands are required. Reaching above shoulder, walking on uneven or slippery surfaces and standing (4 hrs.), outside and inside environments. Near Vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4 & Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20-/40 in the other. Both eyes required, and have Depth Perception, Hearing (aid use is permitted). **Other **(Clear Speech, Emotional Stability). Must be able to work closely with others and work alone as well.
