Duties: The Deputy Medical Director Primary Care Physician Assistant (PA) provides administrative, programmatic, and clinical leadership to primary care programs in Greenville, NC within the Durham VA Health Care System, under the direction of the Medical Director Primary Care-Greenville to ensure achievement of the clinical, research, and education goals. The incumbent reports to the Medical Director Primary Care- Greenville and serves as a key clinical resource. The Deputy Medical Director Primary Care will serve as first line direct-on site supervisor for a number of Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT) primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The position is a dual clinical and administrative role. Primary Care Physician Assistant will be responsible for delivery of primary care to patients enrolled at the Durham VA HCS. The provider will manage scheduled and unscheduled patients in the outpatient clinic setting. Primary focus of practice is the independent clinical evaluation of Veterans including prevention and patient self-management. Comprehensive primary care will be provided to male and female Veterans. Care may be provided in many modalities including direct face to face care and virtual care (including telephonic, video, secure messaging, and others. Promotes, directs, evaluates, and manages clinical concerns that are found during these evaluations and is responsible for requesting referrals- if needed. Functions as a member or in support of a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT), collaborating with clinical and administrative support to provide timely, quality, coordinated care for Veterans. Utilizes and promotes approved standards of care, procedures, methods and techniques, safety precautions and protocols to this population. Collaborates with other health care staff/resources to ensure continuity of care. Primary providers in the outpatient setting are typically assigned a panel of patients to manage. Panel size at this time is determined by utilizing VHA software. Alternative or collateral duties may include management of a subsection of primary care patients or coverage of urgent or gap patients. Participates in special projects as the projects become available through strategic or other initiatives. May need to assist in coverage for and care of the patients of colleagues. Physician assistant's need to follow departmental and VHA policies for leave and attendance and work within Title 38 appointment guidelines. Timely documentation and work completion is necessary in all areas in accordance with HCS policy.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Physician Assistant Basic Requirements Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~ Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Outpatient primary care provider experience of 3 years. Clinical provider leadership experience of 1 year. Experience in improving clinical quality measures. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-8 Physician Assistant Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires mostly periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on stakeholder needs.
