This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Salem VA Medical Center in Facility Management Service, Mechanical Section.
Duties
The following duties are performed:
Assist the shop supervisor and act on his behalf when absent.
Designs and lays out jobs, instructs others in proper procedures, codes, policies, regulations, and the use of new equipment.
Passes to employees the instructions received from supervisors and gets work started; assigns tasks to be performed by members of the group.
Ensures that work crews complete their work in a timely manner while following codes, regulations, policies and safety rules.
Ensures that needed plans, materials, and tools are available for each job.
Ensures that daily reports are made to supervisor on the progress of jobs and requests for needed materials are done in a proper and timely manner.
Checks work in progress and upon completion to ensure supervisor's instructions and deadlines have been met.
Ensures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
Promotes the accurate completion of quality work assignments in a timely and effective manner.
Assists in developing training programs and assist in doing training for shop personnel
Performs other duties assigned.
Work Schedule: Other; 7:45 a.m.TO 4:30p.m. "Must have the ability to work out side of normal Tour of Duty including Weekends and Holidays if required

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Incumbent shall make installation and repairs from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and where parts of systems worked on are hard to reach places. This requires incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lifts and carries heavy materials such as pipe, plumbing equipment, iron bars and materials.
The work is performed inside and outside and usually dirty, dusty and greasy and the incumbent makes repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Incumbent is subject to the possibility of scrapes, burns, infections and communicable diseases
