About the Position: This position is with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Cold Regions Research Engineer Lab (CRREL). Position will be filled at any of the locations listed below: Fairbanks, Alaska: $77,898 - $101,263 Hanover, New Hampshire: $69,107 - $89,835 (salary is subject to increase based on new 2024 GS pay table)

Duties

Conducts fundamental and applied computer, laboratory and field research studies in the field of environmental sensing and soil sciences. Applies professional knowledge and background of data analysis and chemical characterization of soil. Participates in field studies to aid in data collection, which may include long deployments in austere environments. Works with research teams composed of junior and senior researchers. Presents findings to general public, high level officials, and the scientific communities. Develops new research ideas and laboratory techniques. Conducts detailed literature reviews.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: GS-11 Qualification Requirements: This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Conducting background literature reviews Developing the overall research approach, to include manpower, equipment, and funding requirements Formulating conclusions that are presented orally and in a series of published contributions Providing advisory services and maintains professional competence Operating instruments in laboratory settings and field environments OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as physical science, engineering, or mathematics. (Note: You must submit a copy of your transcript.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Physical SciencesPlanning and EvaluatingResearchTechnical Competence All qualification requirements, including time after competitive appointment, must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-9).
