About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.
Duties
As a Locksmith (Motor Vehicle Operator) you will utilize skills and techniques of the locksmith trade to assignments which involve complete disassembly of locking devices.
Determine the parts required to repair the lock, identifying replacement requirements, as well as repairing alignment or lubrication of the lock.
Instruct personnel on the proper care and use of equipment.
Determine the proper method of entry for security containers which may involve manipulating the lock or using tools such as electric drills or picks. Utilize machinery to manufacture keys for all types of locks and padlocks.
Neutralize locks through methods such as exchange or recombination of existing core when keys have been misplaced or damaged.
Coordinate with personnel when locking devices to be repaired are interconnected with alarm systems.
Participate with security specialists to investigate security violations involving possible mechanical failure of locks.
Ensure that locking devices are in operable condition while following regulatory guidelines.
Establishes and fulfills regular preventive maintenance schedules which include
provisions for changing approximately 1000 hand and key change type combinations at six
to ten month intervals.
Operates a motor vehicle up to 1 1/2 ton to transport co-workers, equipment and
supplies.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Tier 3 Secret Clearance is required.
- Travel up to 5% of the time.
- A 1 year probationary period may be required.
- Heavy lifting up to 125 pounds.
- Pre-employment and annual physicals are required.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid State Driver's License.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Locksmith (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. Opening locks of doors with misplaced keys, cut new or duplicate keys, using key cutting machines and keeping records of locks and keys. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
To meet the basic eligibility for this position, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Handles and lifts security containers ranging in weight from 25 to 150 pounds, with assistance. Subject to possible cuts and injuries from use of hand and machine tools.
Work is performed inside adequately heated and ventilated buildings with frequent exposure to the outside elements. Frequent walking and working on concrete floors. Safety hazards and injuries may result from moving equipment, using various tools, and applying chemical and petroleum products.
