Duties

Joining Customs & Border Protection (CBP) will allow you to utilize your expertise as a Supervisory Chemist (Laboratory Director) of a field laboratory within Laboratories and Scientific Services Directorate (LSSD) serving as a senior leader, directing and managing the field laboratory, as well as providing scientific and technical advisory services to a wide range of clients, including both the federal service as well as external organizations. This position starts at a salary of $158,520.00 (GS-15, Step 1) to $183,500.00 (GS-15, Step 10) with promotion potential to $ $183,500.00(GS-15 Step 10). Major Duties Include: Coordinating scientific activities with other governmental agencies and laboratory systems. Developing criteria for and conducting scientific tests and investigations on merchandise and evidence referred to the laboratory; and furnishing scientific and technical advisory services. Initiating, organizing, and managing the development of a comprehensive program to find solutions to novel and complex issues that result from chemical and physical scientific tests and investigations. Maintaining currency on national and international scientific and technological developments and advancements in chemistry and forensics science methodology and instrumentation.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: A. Degree: Physical sciences, life sciences or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours in physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics plus appropriate experience or additional education. You qualify for this position if you meet the basic requirement listed above and possess the experience or substitution of education, if applicable, as described below Specialized Experience: You qualify for the GS-15 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Consulting and advising colleagues in the laboratory system and in headquarters offices on scientific support, technical advancements, and special programs; Developing and implementing plans to improve scientific and technological developments and advancements in chemistry and forensic services methodology and instrumentation; and Setting priorities and schedules for completion, and assigns work to direct reports NOTE: Your resume must explicitly indicate how you meet this requirement, otherwise you will be found ineligible.
