Duties

The Chemotherapy/IV Pharmacy Technician is a highly specialized technician who, under the authority of the Chief, Pharmacy Service, Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations, and the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor, is responsible to assure nonhazardous and hazardous compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) are correctly compounded, packaged, sealed, labeled (including assignment of appropriate beyond-use date [BUD]), stored, and distributed. This position requires that the Chemotherapy/IV Pharmacy Technician demonstrates a concerned and critical attitude toward accuracy and strict adherence to USP and USP guidelines and IV Room Pharmacy policy and procedure, including quality assurance. The Chemotherapy/IV Pharmacy Technician also acts as a representative of the Pharmacy Service in a variety of Pharmacy related functions within the Healthcare System. The incumbent will be trained and expected to function and maintain competency in other areas of Pharmacy Service, as needed and assigned. In addition, and as deemed necessary by either the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations or the Pharmacy Supervisor(s), the incumbent may assist in other patient care areas, as needed, to maintain the consistency of overall Pharmacy services. FUNCTIONS Chemotherapy/IV Pharmacy Technician Prepares chemotherapy agents and compounded sterile products (CSPs) in compliance with USP and USP guidelines (generally 25% or more of regularly assigned daily duties) to be delivered in finished forms such as large volume parenteral, small volume parenteral, infusion syringe, infusion pump, ophthalmic preparation, or other modality as required. Is familiar with use of closed-system transfer devices (CSTD) and other equipment needed for safe and proper CSP preparation. Undergoes initial IV Room Pharmacy training and competency assessment and annual re-assessment and successfully maintains this requirement. Obtains and utilizes knowledge of hazards of cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents, including but not limited to the dangers posed to those who prepare, deliver, administer, and/or receive treatment with these agents and the equipment and supplies used in the preparation of cytotoxic chemotherapy. Uses advanced knowledge of specialized techniques and procedures required for safely handling cytotoxic agents such as negative pressure technique, hazardous waste disposal, and cytotoxic spill response. Cleans the specified areas in the anteroom and cleanrooms, performing monthly surface sampling in all ISO classified areas as required per policy and operational standards. Uses advanced knowledge of specialized techniques and procedures required for safely handling cytotoxic agents such as negative pressure technique, hazardous waste disposal, and cytotoxic spill response. Correctly interprets Provider orders, selects, and measures appropriate ingredients, mixes ingredients in a safe and effective manner, inspects the final product for accuracy, suitability and elegance, labels the product, maintains record of the manufacturing process, and prepares the product for delivery. Assigns an appropriate beyond-use date (BUD). Consistently displays competence with good manufacturing practices and sterile technique through demonstration and/or actual work performance. Functions independently daily with minimal supervision from the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor(s). Coordinates with specialty services to ensure scheduled medications for the upcoming week are available to meet patient care needs. Communicates with pharmacy and specialty care leadership if issues or concerns arise regarding medication supply. Coordinates with Pharmacy procurement technicians to procure appropriate quantities of chemotherapy agents and IV medications and supplies for the cleanroom other facility storage areas. Receives new stock and returned stock into inventory. Other Technician Duties- Performs all the duties of Pharmacy technician at lower grades as necessary. Maintenance of current Pharmacy Technician certification is required. Work Schedule: Tour of Duty will be 8 hour shifts between the hours of 7:00am -10:00 pm on a rotating basis that may include weekends and holidays. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-8 Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. Physical Requirements: Physical movements involve completion of routine pharmacy functions which include but are not limited to significant computer work/typing, prescription order entry and processing, contact of patients (both face to face and via phone). Certain tasks are repetitive in nature and require multiple steps performed in succession for success. The incumbent should be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without significant difficulty. Incumbent must be able to stand or sit in one place for considerable time during completion of complex tasks. Complexity of mental processes involved is extensive, demanding, and challenging.
