The electrician position is located with the Western Colorado Healthcare System, Grand Junction Colorado VA, Engineering Service. As a journeyman electrician, the incumbent performs a combination of design, installation, testing, uses, repair, and/or maintenance of electrical equipment, components, instruments, and/or systems.
Duties
Duties of the journeyman electrician include but are not limited to:
Installing, modifying, repairing, trouble-shooting, and testing new and existing electrical systems from the underground primary (13.2KV) to secondary )120/208/277/480 volts) single and ploy-phase, distribution systems including diesel powered auxiliary power generating systems.
Inspecting, locating, and diagnosing trouble and perform maintenance service and repairs to electrical wiring systems, circuit breaker panels, automatic and manual fire alarm systems, emergency alarm systems, lighting systems, clocks, rheostats, thermostats, light fixtures, motors, fans, shop equipment, and other electrically powered equipment.
Preparing requisitions for materials, tools, and equipment needed.
Fabricating and installing conduits, preparing conductors for installation, connecting component parts or component circuits, test circuits, and connecting completed circuitry to power source for energization.
Planning, layout, and completing the installation, modification, and repair of signal systems, switches, relays, new outlets, new lighting, automatic timers, new shop equipment, and remodeling, restoring, and/or overhauling existing electrical installations and equipment.
Performing maintenance of electrical hardware such as sockets, plugs, bulbs, cords, wall plates, storage batters, etc.
Performing the electrical portion of the preventative maintenance program and checks the mechanical and plumbing items visually during the inspection; conducting the test of all electrical receptacles for ground tension, etc., and checking non-technical/technical medical equipment for grounding and leakage.
Making repairs on motors of various capacities to include testing and installation; duties relating to the design and installation of branch distribution systems from the circuit distribution point to the delivery connection.
Performing monthly emergency generator test to ensure they are ready for operation
Working from schematic drawings which provide work specifications
Using tools pertinent to the trade such as ammeters, voltmeters, line tracers, etc.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 3:00pm to 11:30pm

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside and is usually dusty, dirty, and greasy. Sometimes work is outside in inclement weather and in areas that are noisy. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of electrical shock, broken bones, burns, cuts, and bruises. Repairs and installations are necessary from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and hard to reach places, which may require stooping, bending, crawling, reaching, kneeling, climbing, standing, and working in uncomfortable and tiring positions. Incumbent must be capable of listing approximately 50 pounds.
