Duties
These positions serve as a temporary seasonal Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) for the West Desert District.
Collect data on wildlife habitat conditions and age, species location, breeding status, species condition.
Compile and organize survey data, prepares narratives and reports; enters and receives data from automated databases.
Help other technicians/aids with collecting field data and completing required projects.
Participate in habitat improvement projects such as planting shrubs, trees, and grasses, and weed control.
Participate in inventories of wildlife and their habitats.
Participate in construction projects such as water developments and fencing.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-05 grade level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity. Examples of specialized experience include banding, tagging, and releasing wildlife; inventorying rare and endangered species habitat based on guidelines.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.
To qualify at the GS-06 grade level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity. Examples of specialized experience include surveying, mapping and documenting a variety of wildlife species and habitat conditions; compiling occurrence and distribution data, cover maps, and herbarium study mounts; assisting in performing wildlife studies and in constructing wildlife habitat improvement structures; and compiling data obtained through survey/study and assembling the data into a logical sequence for review
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed (1) one full year of graduate study directly related to the work of the position.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.
To qualify at the GS-07 grade level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized work experience at or equivalent to GS-06 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity. Examples of specialized experience include using knowledge of basic principles of wildlife to evaluate data collected for accuracy computer capabilities sufficient to produce reports with graphics, produce simple maps develop spreadsheets enter, retrieve and manipulate data familiarity of wildlife in their natural habitat; collecting scientific data conduct wildlife inventories; and analyze data.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed (1) one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.
Education
Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
