Duties

May identify range improvement needs. May plan and conduct allotment inspections. Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, may safely mix, maintain, and calibrate herbicides and pesticides for use in rangeland environments. Ensure grazing permit and lease stipulations are complied with. Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, may performs routine and recurring weed management activities in accordance with all applicable plans, agreements, and regulations. Assist with updating case files and automated documents. May operate, maintain, and inventory weed management equipment (tools, monitoring/mapping equipment, pesticide applicators, etc.). Work with permitees/lessees on project maintenance and conditions. Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, may work with cooperators to complete weed projects with user groups, recreationists, volunteers, etc. May conduct range studies for condition and trend, utilization, actual use, climatology and other information used for allotment evaluations.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include: assisting with conservation, regulation, and use of public or federally controlled lands for grazing; conduct range research activities; work in the operation of a livestock ranch or perform range/forest fire control, prevention or suppression work. -OR- Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed a full 4-year (180 quarter or 120 semester hours) course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with a major forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. -OR- Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. To qualify at the GS-06 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include performing maintenance for range improvements; assisting in enforcement of range rules and regulations; and assisting in locating conservation and range improvement projects. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet. To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting in the management of public range resources of a district or other specified area by observing and reporting special conditions regarding them; and performing the detailed work necessary to complete specific plans for development of an area for proper range management and conservation; OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting. Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
