Position is located in Manzanar National Historic Site, in the Cultural Resources Division. Open to the first 101 applicants or until 12/06/2023 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 PM EST on the closing day will receive consideration.

Duties

This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Some of the duties you will perform include, but are not limited to: Conduct archeological field surveys including shovel tests, excavations, surface-level for archeological features and artifacts. Record data and prepare survey records. Conduct archeological monitoring in support of park projects. Survey and document previously known archeological sites for condition assessments. Evaluate, process and prepare specimens for research, dating or other investigations. Identify, label, package, and catalog artifacts for curation. Work with park curator to perform cataloging and support curation duties. Enters archeological artifact and project data including artifact information, catalog records, field notes, site records, etc. into automated systems, appropriate forms, and archival records. Retrieve and compile data required for resource management reports. Assist in the development of a variety of documents (e.g. cultural resource management plans, preservation guides, etc.) by gather data from files and reports, conduct research, and prepare draft documents. Use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to record cultural resource sites and projects and generate professional quality maps. Survey and excavation work is typically performed in isolated areas; the incumbent must therefore be familiar with outdoor safety and survival skills and must be able to operate a vehicle on rough roads. Sustained periods of camping under primitive conditions are routine. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by 11:59 PM EST when the 'applicant cut-off' is reached (which may be sooner than -12/06/2023). Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Conducting work in support of historic preservation including archeological inventory and monitoring, conducting literature searches in support of historic preservation, writing survey and excavation reports, laboratory analysis of archeological materials, and using GPS and GIS to record archeological sites and features; assisting in the preparation of documentation for purposes of compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate-level education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study) that is directly related to the position being filled. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of directly related semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking, AND degree conferral if appliable. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.



There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.
