You will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator in the NAVY SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT ACTIVITY. This position is in the excepted service and does not confer competitive status.

Duties

You will drive gasoline or diesel powered trucks or truck tractors to transport material and equipment. You will operate electric, gas, or diesel powered forklift trucks to load and unload supplies, material, and equipment. You will comply with state and local regulations governing the operation of vehicles transporting hazardous materials. You will read and interpret transportation requirements and shipping regulations for specific materials. You will load and arrange cargo into vehicle using techniques and equipment (e.g., chains, binders, straps, tie-downs) for safe transit.

Requirements

  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current Forklift certification.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to possess and maintain a current Class A CDL with HAZMAT endorsement.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. An example of the screen out element is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including driving over public roads and at highway speeds handling the controls for starting, stopping, backing, shifting and driving the vehicle; judging overhead and side clearances, turning radius, and braking distance from the preceding vehicle; loading, unloading, and overseeing the securing of cargo; followed prescribed routes; understanding and applying safety rules and regulations, using defensive driving techniques; safely operated gasoline and diesel trucks and truck tractors with trailers or semi-trailers connected by use of a fifth wheel or a pintle hook; operated vehicles with air brakes connections between the truck and the trailers; conducted vehicle inspections; completed trip tickets, logs and accident reports (as required); verified correct vehicle placarding; handled and transported hazardous materials; assured that HAZMAT is properly documented. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
