About the Position: Performs a variety of duties related to the inspection, maintenance, and repair of targets, target devices, and the immediate areas in which these items are located. This is a PERMANENT Electrical Equipment Worker (Motor Vehicle Operator/Target Devices) position with the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobility and Security located at Fort Jackson, SC.

Duties

Inspect and test various target systems to include hardwired infantry ranges, RETS (Remote Target Systems), as well as other equipment on gunnery ranges. Review technical manuals and manufacturers specifications provide applicable procedures and diagrams for repair. Make electrical/electronic diagnosis and repairs on target systems with varying levels and types of voltage. Replace and/or recharge batteries/battery system (e.g., dry cell, wet cell, etc.) on portable target systems. Monitor power distribution boxes and electronic service to range facilities, removes control and target inner connecting boxes when necessary. Troubleshoot equipment to determine nature of malfunction (e.g., electrical, electronic, mechanical) and extent of repair required.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires the use of protective clothing/uniform and equipment.
  • This position requires the incumbent to pass a pre-employment physical examination to meet the physical efforts requirements of this position.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 70 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Occasionally lifts up to 100 pounds or over with assistance from other workers or the help of weight handling equipment. The work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods and bending, stooping, and working in cramped positions. Working Conditions: Works with electrical power supplies from I2 volt dc, 120 vat to 480 vat, 3 phase high voltage current. Exposed to electrical shock which may cause death or serious injury. Works inside and outside during all types of weather conditions. Stands on concrete floors and works on ranges in rough terrain. Exposed to dangers of live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies and explosives. May be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries used in operation remotely controlled target devices. Is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, explosive charges equivalent to 1/4 pound charge of Dynamite. Hearing protective devices are issued or available for use.
