This position serves as a Biologist at the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) within the Wildlife Services (WS) Program for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The work is primarily concerned with the development of non-lethal methods to aid in the management of wildlife including mammals, focusing on fertility control.
Duties
The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Work as part of a research team involved in developing non-lethal methods for fertility control of wildlife species.
Design, coordinate and implement research studies under supervision of Fertility Control Project Leader; ensuring that studies are conducted in compliance with regulations and procedures.
Assists in the establishment of new methods and technologies in research program.
Summarize research findings, enter results into computer databases where appropriate, and perform basic statistical analyses of data.
Provide advice and technical assistance to graduate students and visiting scientists.
Supervision of production and shipping of GonaCon Immunocontraceptive Vaccine.
Maintain laboratories and equipment to a high standard.
Comply with Biosafety and Biosecurity Procedures, Good Laboratory Practices, Animal Welfare Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and applicable laws and regulations.
Knowledge of complex experimental techniques in cell or molecular biology, vaccine design and animal studies.
Requirements

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT:
0401: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement you will also need to meet the following:
FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Experience with experimental techniques in cell or molecular biology, vaccine design, or animal studies.
Experience with tissue collection or dissection, in vitro cell culture, protein purification, bioconjugations, ELISA or collection of biological samples from live animals.
Ability to prepare written documentation, may include reports of research activities, grant writing, or author scientific publications.
OR
3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field of study directly related to the work of this position as described in the vacancy announcement.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
