The Security Assistant position is located in Police Services in Sheridan VA Medical Center and satellites. The primary purpose of the position is to monitor physical security equipment and systems. Incumbent performs the following, including but not limited to: physical security support (alarm/access monitoring), communications (monitoring/receiving emergency calls), operations support (utilizing software), and other duties as assigned. Recruitment or Relocation Incentive may be authorized.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Performs alarm and access monitoring, tracing access patterns, and programming,
Assigns or removes user permissions and updates databases.
Opens and secures doors remotely during routine and emergency operations.
Generates a variety of reports as needed.
Assesses on-scene behavior and determines when it is appropriate to dispatch law enforcement or other personnel to investigate.
Responds to alarm systems, monitoring fire, access, intrusion, duress/panic, medical emergencies, psychiatric emergencies, medical assist teams, and emergency digital paging system.
Monitors emergency weather alerts and transmits warnings system wide when appropriate.
Maintains radio/alarm activity record/logs to include dates, times, and results of communications and activities and prepares completed reports.
Performs and documents emergency callbacks when necessary.
Performs administrative (non-criminal) investigations of lost keys, passes, and Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards for rapid assessment and documentation of any compromised access to VA property.
Monitors and receives routine and emergency calls from a variety of sources that need police, fire, medical or other emergency services.
Determines the nature and location of the emergency; prioritizes events and commits police resources appropriately.
Determines what notifications are necessary based upon event type, makes such notifications, and coordinates follow-up communications.
Monitors and directs responses to security and life safety communications, radio dispatches, telephone calls, and other emergency communication units.
Performs system checks on a variety of equipment used in the dispatch center.
Troubleshoots systems when problems arise and resolves issues whenever possible.
Conducts equipment inventories and completes records and other logs.
Performs monthly alarm checks; submits reports documenting the operational status of each circuit tested.
Enters, updates, and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems and sensitive databases.
Uses VA Police Software to research information, complete reports and logs, and vehicle registrations.
Generates police reports for routine, non-criminal cases such as: lost property and missing patients.
Accomplishes special projects as assigned.
Coordinates warrant confirmations and transports with outside agencies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Hours may include evenings, nights, weekends, and possible rotating shifts (full time hours within a 24-hour and 7 days/week operation) per supervisor approval.

Physical Requirements: The work is typically sedentary in nature. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; etc. No special physical demands are required to perform work. Working on off-tours, rotating shifts, or regular overtime may be required.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience (GS-05 Grade Level): One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the federal service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this Security Assistant position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: knowledge of security or law enforcement objectives and programs; carrying out support tasks related to law enforcement and security administration; monitoring and/or responding to physical alarm systems and security cameras; dispatching officers; monitoring computers for video surveillance; and maintaining reports and logs. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment on their resume.

Education (GS-05 Grade Level): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level requires successful completion of four (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

Combination (GS-05 Grade Level): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Only post-high school education (beyond the second year). This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. NOTE: If using education combined with specialized experience to qualify, a copy of your transcript is required.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
