This Lead Dental Assistant position is located at the Kearny Mesa CBOC of the Jennifer Moreno VA Medical Center. VA San Diego Healthcare System Dental Clinic Serves as an integral member of the dental team and facilitates team processes by working collaboratively with team members to ensure that tasks are completed, that good working relationships among team members and with management are maintained, and that team priorities and goals, needs and achievements are coordinated with management.

Duties

Major duties include , but are not limited to: Leads a team of dental employees. Provides the guidance and technical direction necessary for accomplishing the work of the team. Takes responsibility for the dental team's performance on National dental performance measures/monitors and indicators. Serves as a work leader, assuring the work assignments of employees in the unit are carried out. Coordinates daily work assignments at the start of the shift and throughout the day as the need arises. Monitors the status and progress of work and makes adjustments in accordance with established priorities. Obtains assistance from the Dental Chief or Supervisory Dental Assistant as needed for major issues or problems which arise. Provides expert advice on specific tasks, procedures and policies. Identifies training needs and instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques. Trains employees and fee basis providers in computerized dental patient record systems including generating patient consults, storing and viewing digital images, entry of diagnostic data and preparation of treatment plans. Trains (or makes arrangements for training) team members, students and volunteers in the accomplishment of tasks or projects. Maintains current knowledge and answers questions from team members on procedures, policies, and directives. Makes written instructions, reference materials, and relevant background material available. Obtains needed information on decisions from the Dental Chief or Supervisory Dental Assistant on major issues and problems that arise. Provides input in developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Reusable Medical Device (RMD). Trains dental team in SOPs and reports noncompliance to Dental Section Chief or Supervisory Dental Assistant. Works closely with and serves as the liaison with Sterile Processing Department (SPD) to ensure availability of instruments so that clinical care is not delayed. Works closely with and serves as the liaison with Logistics Service to manage dental supplies and materials to assure adequate stock levels and appropriate storage. Works closely with and serves as the liaison to Prosthetics Service. Serves as the Dental point-of-contact with the Safe Patient Coordinator. Serves as the Dental point-of-contact with the Radiation Safety Officer. Works with Health Administrative Service (HAS) to schedule appointments and serves as the liaison between other schedulers and the providers to maintain efficient and productive use of the providers' patient care time and minimize missed opportunities. Reports to the Dental Chief or Supervisory Dental Assistant on individual performance, progress, and training needs of employees, and on performance problems. (Makes recommendations to the Dental Chief or Supervisory Dental Assistant as requested concerning promotions, reassignments, and recognitions of performance and personnel needs. Maintains the dental station and treatment area in a clean and operational condition. Assures that the dental treatment area is set up and shut down each workday to maintain security of the clinic area and dental equipment. Delegates these duties as necessary. Monitors function of dental equipment and requests repair or replacement. Prepares electronic work orders and monitors completion. Participates in the development of equipment requests and justifications based on workload. Performs collateral duties as assigned by the Dental Chief to ensure that the mission of the Dental Service and the Medical Center has been satisfied. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and Education Experience. Six months experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work, or provides familiarity with the work. OR, Education. Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying. Certification. Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field. Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.; OR, Successful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry. OR, Successful completion of a radiation health and safety program or examination approved by a state board of dentistry or the Department of Defense (DoD). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including certification (for positions above the full performance level) that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply: Such employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level, or [changed to lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. Such employees MUST meet the certification requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels. Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. Employees initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional education and/or licensure/certification/registration that meet all the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation. If an employee who was retained under this provision leaves the occupation, the employee loses protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry to the occupation. Grade Determinations: GS-7 Lead Dental Assistant Experience. At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level or equivalent that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Skill in coordinating clinical work flow and assignments Ability to assist in dental program development, outcome management, and strategic planning Skill in acting as liaison between staff dental assistants and the supervisor Ability to provide professional oversight and consultation for staff dental assistants. Preferred Experience: Certification in basic life support methods is highly desirable. Performs complex procedures - Oral Surgery and work with specialty clinics Endodontics and Prosthodontics. Extensive knowledge to expose both standard and specialty dental imaging (i.e., CBCT - Implants and TMJ) in digital formats. Experience in supervision, administrative management, and direction of dental assistants. Conducts training presentation to dental teams in group settings. Collaborates with team members in completing daily tasks. Experience in planning and coordinating daily work assignments. Experience in providing guidance and technical direction to the dental team. Knowledge in various Policies, Handbooks and Directives, Memoranda and Standard Operating Procedures, Workplace duties and Competencies within the VHA, Medical Center and Dental Service. Knowledge in policy development and workload analysis. Administers performance evaluation and initiates disciplinary action.
