This position is located within the Gastroenterology (GI) Section, Medicine Service of the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System in Loma Linda, California providing a wide variety of technical and administrative duties to support the GI Clinic and GI Laboratory staff.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Provides the necessary and vital information for all specialty procedures in the GI Lab and Clinic; Plans, manages and coordinates GI procedures and patient education under the direction of the GI medical provider; Interviews patients to obtain medical/personal history; Uses a variety of computer applications, clinical procedure menus and GI lab database to enter orders; Ensures the GI Clinic procedural areas are prepared for patient care at the beginning of the duty day; Assists with specialized GI clinic procedures utilizing specialized equipment the require precise advanced skills; Performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording and reporting to supervisor deviations in vital signs; Cleans and performs minor maintenance and adjustments of equipment; Obtains and reconcile patient medication list prior to the visit or over the phone inquiries; Answers and directs phone calls and assists visitors to the office; Performs a wide variety of administrative tasks associated with maintaining and supporting the work performed in the GI Lab and Clinic; Maintains files and documents patient records; Performs related duties as required. Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Qualifications

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. In addition to meeting the English Language Proficiency, to qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in Federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to planning, managing and coordinating procedures and patient education within a medical clinic; scheduling appointments; documenting electronic health records; explaining procedures to patients; setting up exam rooms; obtaining vital signs; assisting medical personnel with preparation of procedures; tracks equipment and supplies; inputs information in a database. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position held and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~ Education: Successfully completed one half (1/2) year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent) with a major that included courses directly related to the work of this position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the position. Education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: ClericalClinical Data Collection/DocumentationManages ResourcesPatient Care IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: Physical demands are usually moderate to include computer work, data entry, assisting patients and GI Lab staff. Occasionally, the technician assists with moving heavy equipment or large patients, but this is done with the assistances of others to minimize the risk to individuals. The position usually works in a clinical setting with potential exposure to body fluids/chemicals. Work is performed in a setting involving the potential for exposure to infectious and contagious diseases.
