This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The Anniston Army Depot is located in Anniston, Alabama in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain chain halfway between Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL just off Interstate 20. The Depot is the largest employer in Calhoun County with approximately 4000 employees.

Duties

Inspect and repair boiler fittings Verify specified operation of automatic combustion control systems, feed water regulators, and burners. Observes boiler and auxiliary units to detect malfunctions and makes repairs Operates automatically fired boilers to generate steam that supplies heat for industrial processes. Assist in taking on supplies and equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Federal Wage System employees, WG/WL/WS etc, must satisfactorily complete the appropriate annual Depot Medical Examination.
  • Incumbent must pass physical examination requirements for working in toxic ammunition area (Group GB, VX, and H) and apply first aid training including self-injection of antidote to gases to which exposed.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respirator, etc.)

Who May Apply: US Citizens This position is a TERM, 1 year 1 day, position. This is a temporary position and may be extended up to a maximum of eight (8) years. In order to qualify, you must meet the Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to Have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic duties. i am skilled in reading dials of temperature, pressure, and ampere gauges and meters to detect malfunctions and ensure specified operation of equipment as well as performing tests to electrical system to determine voltage, using voltage meter. I am able to maintain log of meter and gauge readings and record data, such as water test results and quantity of fuel consumed. i am able to troubleshoots malfunctions in electrical circuits as necessary. Follows all safety rules and procedures and operates electrical equipment in accordance with established safety regulations and department policies. Perform Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic duties without more than normal supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Work requires frequent stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling for long periods of time. Frequently works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms repairing and installing parts in hard-to-reach places. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Work Conditions: Performs work mostly on concrete floors where heat is relatively high. Working inside and/or outside, there is exposure to dirt, dust, and fumes which are occasionally disagreeable. Works in close and cramped quarters or cramped positions. There is danger of falls from ladders, platforms and from injuries due to working with power tools. Work assignments involve a thorough knowledge of hazardous material handling and related activities. Incumbent is required to successfully complete a variety of hazardous material classes. There is a possibility of exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes from spills and/or leaks and incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respirator, etc.)
