This position is located with the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, located in Phoenix, Arizona. Incumbent performs various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include logging, batching, and cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required.

Duties

Performs routine and specialized assignments and demonstrates proficiency and understanding of the procedures in the areas of anatomical pathology under the direction of the Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist and subsequent Lead Histotechnologist. Prepare equipment for processing, embedding, cutting, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), special staining, and mounting tissue. Perform routine and special paraffin sections of surgical and autopsy tissue for microscopic examination in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, including whole-mount tissue histopathology preparation on prostate and eye specimens. Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures such as oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule, recording temperatures on various instruments, changing the processor according to procedure, and changing staining solutions. Maintains adequate stocks of inventory while allowing for little to no wastage of inventory, reagent or product due to shelf storage expiration. Ensures proper levels of supplies in the laboratory are available for distribution.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. For GS-5:Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Examples include: Perform a variety of standardized tests and examinations under "normal" technical supervision. Follows written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations including the techniques, procedures, stains, reagents, chemicals, temperatures, measurements, controls to use and observe, machine settings, etc. Perform phlebotomy services, both fingers sticks and adult venipunctures. Determine correct blood specimen for each test ordered. Adhere to quality control procedures. OR Bachelor's degree with major study in medical or clinical laboratory or a related field such as chemistry and/or the biological sciences; OR, a Bachelor's degree in any field that includes at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. Eligible courses may include: chemistry, hematology, blood banking, microbiology, or the biological sciences. OR Have a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-05 grade level. Minimum Qualifications: GS-06:Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples include: Provides technical expertise and skill in providing histological services such as: cutting, staining, embedding and mounting of all tissue specimens received in the laboratory; processes surgical and autopsy specimens; estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work, and maintains records of work accomplishment; provides a full range of laboratory testing procedures to furnish accurate, medically pertinent data in the most expeditious time frames and in the most cost effective manner; provide diagnosis of hemostatic and metabolic disorders, with a responsibility for performing a full range of pathology. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
