The Chief Nurse of Geriatrics and Extended Care is responsible for ensuring the delivery of nursing care to Veteran residents and managing nursing personnel at first or second line supervisor within geriatric and extended care programs at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center.
Duties
The Chief Nurse (IV) Geriatrics and Extended Care must establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of medical center personnel and relate effectively with customers, families and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and network levels. A collaborative relationship with the Director of Geriatrics and Extended Care is critical to carrying out the mission and program directives. Functions well as part of an interdisciplinary team to improve care to Veterans. Is responsible for the oversight and operations of the CLC units, GEC home based primary care, hospice/palliative care, and other responsibilities as assigned. Upholds the missing vision and values of the hospital and the Veterans Health Administration.
Key relationships with staff are needed to:
*Assist Management staff and others such as Home-Based Primary Care(HBPC), MDS coordinators, Restorative Care, Case Management and *Palliative care for optimal Resident care.
*Contribute ideas and recommendations for the establishment of standards of care, policies, and objectives for the enhancement of nursing organization-wide including geriatric care.
*Assists in policy-making activities as related to customer service and the overall functioning of administrative and clinical programs.
*Collaborate with other health care staff to establish and maintain programs that cross service and or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care.
Duties include but not limited to:
Answers to Deputy Associate Director Patient Care (DADPCS) in overall administration of the skilled care, rehabilitation, and hospice Community Living Center and other programs and in guiding the overall management of the practice of nursing and the profession of nursing within Nursing Service.
Collaborates with the Deputy ADPCS to formulate long and short-term goals for the service and aligns these goals with the goals of the Medical Center. Develops action plans to accomplish the service line goals within the established timeliness and available resources.
Maintains budgeting and hiring oversight.
Demonstrates sound nursing and administrative judgement in decision-making and leadership with interdisciplinary groups involved in the planning, designing, implementing and improving patient care services and health care delivery systems.
Responsible for regulatory surveys and compliance with all safety, regulatory and accrediting body requirements for general nursing related issues and Geriatric care.
Promotion of continuous process improvement (CPI) using change management techniques.
Promoting LEAN training and concepts with training and support for all staff.
Assesses, plans and evaluates the processes and daily operations of the assigned programs.
Is and active member on Medical Center and VISN Committees as applicable.
Standardizes work and process to promote HRO.
Leads meetings with Nurse Managers/Program Managers to discuss goals, initiatives, and other information necessary for ongoing patient operations.
Participates in monthly leadership meetings and participates as member of Nursing Service Leadership team in meetings with other services.
Promotes Continuous Survey Readiness.
Participates as part of Nursing Service Leadership Team, with DADPCS in decision-making for programmatic, clinical, nursing and administrative accountability for Nursing. This includes personnel management, staff education, and participation in determining specific program needs, budget analysis, and future growth of all programs.
Provides leadership to GEC supervisors to organize work in order to maximize efficiency and quality of service of standard work and responsibilities.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: MSN, 5 years of progressive leadership responsibility,3-5 years of experience in long term care. Program Leadership and Certification in leadership Development graduate. Certified in LEAN CPI
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.
