The Motor Vehicle Operator Supervisor position, located at Veterans Healthcare System of the Ozarks, Fayetteville, Arkansas, plans and directs the Engineering Service programming that provides support services for coordination of courier duties for mail, pharmacy deliveries, patient files, lab and pathology specimens. Controls daily operations of these support services and provides the technical and management guidance necessary to achieve optimum use of the support services resources.

Duties

The Motor Vehicle Operator Supervisor is responsible for the planning, operation and supervision of operation of all employees and vehicles in the Engineering Service fleet for the transportation of patients and equipment for the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks, Fayetteville, AR (VHSO) and provides support to the healthcare system Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). Duties include: Operates vehicles such as shuttle carts/golf carts, vans, pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, and sports utility vehicles. Secures cargo to prevent damage to contents during transport and ensures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the maximum capacity. Protects materials, supplies and equipment from the elements. Performs routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure. Leads and directs employees assigned to the service. Manages and coordinates transportation service to the medical center. Supervises the operation of all employees and vehicles in the Engineering Service fleet for the transportation of patients, supplies, and equipment for VHSO and CBOCs. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Considerable walking, climbing, stooping, bending and lifting are required. Position requires good vision and physical alertness when operating and training employees in the operating of various pieces of equipment. While operating motor vehicles, the position exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. May need to exert effort to make emergency repairs, such as changing a flat tire. Frequently, bends, lifts and carries equipment, supplies or materials up to 50 pounds. Incumbent is required to work indoors, outdoors, in summer heat, winter cold, snow and icing conditions, and other weather conditions. Incumbent must be known as a careful driver and be subjected to traffic hazards. The incumbent must be able to climb ladders, work on scaffolds, crawl, squat, stoop, bend, lift heavy loads, work in cramped positions, be on his/her feet over long periods of time, lift patients in and out of vehicles, etc. Work is regularly performed at construction sites, involving regular exposure to adverse weather, high noise levels and hazardous conditions. Most of the work is performed out-of-doors, and exposure to extremes of cold, heat and moisture are common. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises and minor electrical shocks in addition to physical discomfort and injuries associated with the application of fertilizer, herbicides and fungicides as utilized in agricultural applications. Employee may be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85dBA for up to 8 hours per day. This exposure may adversely affect hearing. The wearing of ear protection devices while operating all combustion engine-powered grounds maintenance equipment is mandatory as is participation in the Hearing Conservation Program. Employee must be able to hear while wearing ear protection at a level to safely perform assigned duties. Work is executed mostly outside operating vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads across the healthcare system and offsite clinics/offices. The position is exposed to the possibility of traffic hazards. The position is exposed to dirt, fumes, grease and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falls and broken bones when loading and unloading the vehicle.
