The incumbent will work in the Environmental Management Service, Grounds Maintenance shop as a Gardener/Laborer. Incumbent and crew are responsible for the care and upkeep of the 55 acre campus. Incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Grounds Shop Work Leader.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Cuts grass using walk behind mowers. Cuts and trims trees with chainsaws. Breaks up pavement and chips concrete using jack hammers. Mixes cement using large concrete mixers. Trims weeds using weed whackers. Edges sidewalks and drives using an edger. Compacts soil using gas operated tampers. Other duties consist of but not limited to are; digging trenches, loading and unloading, pressure washing, sweeping, cutting, pruning, blowing, vacuuming, hammering, and picking. Works together with a variety of trades such as Gardeners, Carpenters, and Masons. Work Schedule: 6:30am to 3:00pm; Monday - Friday. Position Description Title/PD#: Laborer/PD06582A Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized Physical Requirements: Requires frequent lifting and moving of equipment weighing over 50 pounds. Very heavy physical effort is required in operating large, riding mowers on grades and in areas with bushes, trees, and other visible obstacles that require significant maneuvering and level control. Works in all types of weather conditions. May be exposed to rain, extreme heat, sunny, cold and windy, dusty, dirt, sandy and muddy conditions. Working Conditions: The Laborer performs work in all types of weather conditions. Some lawn equipment may be open seated and the Laborer may be exposed to rain, extreme heat, sunny, cold and windy, dusty, dirt, sandy and muddy conditions. The Laborer will be required to protect self from these environments with protective clothing, such as rain suites, hats, coveralls, gloves, (PSE) personal safety equipment such as; safety glasses, goggles, hardhats, steel toe shoes, or whatever the situation calls for. Such hazards as tripping, burns, loud noises, falling, and rollovers do exist and could cause serious injury or death to self and others; the Laborer must adhere to all rules and regulations and promote safety during his/ her tour of duty.
