National Defense University (NDU) supports the joint warfighter by providing rigorous Joint Professional Military Education to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and select others in order to develop leaders who have the ability to operate and creatively think in an unpredictable and complex world.
This is a Title 10 Excepted Service Appointment. Appointment is not to exceed 3 years with the possibility for extension.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES
Teaching:
Provides students and faculty with academic writing support through teaching writing courses, designing and conducting workshops, and providing one-on-one instruction/consultation through every step of the writing process.
Demonstrates an engaging, flexible instructional approach that accommodates various skill levels to enable skill transfer and self-efficacy within the curriculum and beyond the classroom.
Assists the Division of Academic Affairs and Writing Center's effort to develop workshops and learning objectives.
Scholarship and Research:
Participate in professional development opportunities such as conferences/panels, publications, and similar activities to learn and improve writing instruction.
Provide writing support for NDU colleagues regarding the development of faculty/student scholarship and/or faculty/student publishing efforts.
Engagement and Outreach:
Participate in service activity to library/component level committees.
Serve in Writing Center working groups to improve teaching and service workflows.
Administration and Service:
Serve on teams and committees in support of the Division of Academic Affairs, Library and the Writing Center's mission.
Collaborate with Writing Center faculty members to create or revise Writing instruction curriculum.
Participate in developing best practices for Writing and Communication instruction and support service.
Fulfill all training requirements and meet administrative requirements and deadlines.

Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or be exempt from Selective Service (see http://www.ssa.gov/)

- The position is governed by 10 USC 1595 and NDUI 1416.0l dated March 2017.
- Must be able and willing to travel both domestically and internationally. Travel is seldom required. Less than 20 % of the time.
- The incumbent must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Possess a graduate degree or a terminal degree in rhetoric, composition, English, or related field from accredited university.
Have a minimum of four years of experience in the field of Writing & Communications, up to three of which may include graduate school experience.
Have a minimum of one year time-in-grade as an Instructor of Writing & Communication (or the equivalent).
Demonstrate a growing understanding of NDU, its colleges and programs, JPME II requirements, and outcomes-based military education (OBME). Attain and maintain certification as a HyFlex Intermediate Instructor.
Have served as the faculty of record on courses and demonstrated a high standard of student achievement in those courses.
Demonstrate an increasing contribution to refinement, development, and implementation through the adoption of new instructional approaches and methods in this discipline.
Conduct research in this discipline and present research findings at regional and national conferences and/or submit articles for regional and national/international publications.
Build an increasingly wide network of responsibility within NDU that may include connections with other research areas. Caucus or attend meetings with a professional group of their field.
Serve the University by participating in committees and working groups.
Demonstrated professionalism in all interactions with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external parties, and a contribution to a climate that fosters respect among students, faculty, staff, and administrators from a range of diverse backgrounds, ideas, and perspectives (workplace accountability).
Failure to gain advancement to Assistant Professor of Writing & Communication does not prejudice one's standing.

Education
Education Requirement: Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent).
Official transcripts will be required at time of selection to verify educational requirements are met.
