Click on "Learn more about this agency" button below for IMPORTANT additional information. The primary purpose of this position is to assist by providing legal and administrative services that facilitate the rapid discharge of personnel.

Duties

Prepares, reviews, and processes administrative discharges and provides administrative support to discharge boards. Meets with victims and witnesses to explain the Victim and Witness Assistance Program and their rights, court-martial process, the right to be provided information regarding the status of a criminal investigation, the arrest of a suspect, and the decision not to pursue prosecution. Utilizes knowledge of administrative discharge process to develop local discharge training plan. Maintains adverse action docket, to include administrative involuntary board-entitled and non-board-entitled discharges. Provides assistance to the legal assistance program as needed in support of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate. Interacts with legal office callers and visitors, exercises sound judgment in ascertaining nature of call or visit and refers to appropriate individual. Receives cases regarding civilian misconduct; performs initial screening of case reports, documentation, and videotapes to determine legal sufficiency of evidence and appropriateness of filing cases for prosecution; independently studies cases, investigates further, and compiles and analyzes data.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of Legal Assistant (Office Automation). Specialized experience is experience which may have been gained while providing victim and witness assistance; legal assistance, administrative, and office automation services to support personnel; and direct assistance to attorneys and other staff by performing necessary research; performing legal support related duties or tasks that use different and unrelated processes, procedures, or methods; analyzing facts and identifying/understanding issues and/or problems involved in each assignment, defining the problem, determining the course of action from many alternatives, researching and determining the interrelationships among available information, and determining what steps and procedures are necessary and the order of their performance; as well as determining a course of action from many alternatives which may be complicated by situations where the facts are not clearly established. OR EDUCATION: One full year of graduate education in a related field. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of Legal Assistant. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. Knowledge of rules, procedures, policies, and programs of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate to perform the procedural and administrative work of the organization. 2. Knowledge of office functions sufficient to screen telephone calls and visitors, prepare and review correspondence, and perform other administrative work as required. 3. Knowledge of various office automation software programs, tools, and techniques to support office-operations and produce a variety of documents such as letters, reports, spreadsheets, databases, and graphs. 4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to advise supervisors of appropriate legal actions. 5. Ability to interpret and apply regulatory and procedural requirements to process unusually difficult and complicated transactions; ability to utilize a legal library and computer resources to perform appropriate research. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
