This vacancy announcement is for a Journeyman Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic in the Mechanical Maintenance Unit of the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Engineering Service located at VA Western NY Healthcare System, located in Batavia, NY. The purpose of the position is to perform a variety of straightforward work in installing and identifying the causes of faulty refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, and repairing the equipment.
Duties
The incumbent maintains, repairs, and installs a variety of commercial, industrial, scientific and domestic air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The Mechanic must have strong troubleshooting and testing skills for electrical mechanical and refrigeration application. The incumbent will maintain air conditioning equipment ranging from small window units to large centrifugal chilled water systems including cooling towers. Incumbents also maintain refrigeration equipment ranging from small domestic type refrigerator/ freezers to -80 deg C scientific freezers and large walk-in systems such as those employed in commercial kitchens. Incumbent will be responsible for following a preventative maintenance program, system checks and logs, review of equipment condition and suitability, reclaiming of refrigerant, system evacuation and charging, and adjustment of controls. The Mechanic may dismantle, repair and reassemble units such as refrigeration systems, mechanical compressors, vapor compressors, condensing units, evaporators, air handling systems, exhaust systems, ice making and water dispensing units, pumps, impellers, mechanical seals, and chilled water systems. The incumbent is responsible for miscellaneous repairs on steam coils, modulating valves and sophisticated controls. Incumbent must be able to utilize, install, repair and maintain building management system including proportional valves, actuators, controllers and work stations. The incumbent must be able to work safely with varying voltages and multiple power sources. Must have the ability to work on and troubleshoot complex electrical and pneumatic systems. The Mechanic must take samples, test water and adjust the water treatment controls to maintain proper balance of the cooling tower water system with specific attention to standards for legionella control. Must have the ability to solder, braze and do minor welding on refrigeration, water and glycol systems ensuring no leaks, and with artistic quality workmanship. The incumbent must possess good customer service skills and the ability to use effective communication to resolve customer complaints and issues such as temperature and humidity control and water leaks.
Repairs and maintains Heating, Ventilating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning systems independently.
Repairs refrigeration systems which incorporate a variety of compressors, refrigerants, and expansion valves and controls. Knowledge of systems whose parameters are monitored and controlled by a computer based system.
Repairs a variety of HVAC operations, such as reheat, VAV, and dual duct systems, along with various other types, using principles, theories, and trade practices in order to locate and repair faulty equipment quickly.
Use printed material found in instruction books, pamphlets, manuals, and handbooks. Also able to read blue prints, schematics, and perspective drawings.
Routine maintenance and care of tools and equipment relating to the installation and repair of HVAC and Refrigeration Systems.
Keeps abreast of new regulations and standards in order to maintain knowledge on proper techniques and material usage.
Performs and documents regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment.
Consistently completes repairs and installations with quality workmanship, in a time frame deemed acceptable to the supervisor and with limited callbacks.
Inspects ongoing projects and reporting deficiencies.
Repairs complex systems where malfunctions are difficult to diagnose.
Troubleshoot prior to repair, to identify the source of malfunctions and develop corrective action.
Ability to solder and braze on refrigeration, water, and glycol systems ensuring no leaks, and with artistic quality workmanship.
