The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System, Inpatient Pharmacy Service is currently recruiting for two (2) Pharmacy Technicians in Muskogee, OK.

The incumbent serves as a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certified technician in the Pharmacy Service. Tour of Duty requires rotating shifts between inpatient and outpatient divisions. The Pharmacy Technician represents the Pharmacy in the medical center and the community.
Assists Pharmacist(s) in filling prescriptions in the mail-out and outpatient section. This includes interpreting and clarifying prescriptions, obtaining the correct stock or containers, correctly counting the amount of medication, attaching the correct label to the filled container, and setting it aside for the final check by a Pharmacist.
Responsible for the prepackaging of unit-of-use and unit-dose drug items used in dispensing functions as well as items for ward stock.
Responsible for automatic replenishment of "approved inventory" of medications in "official storage areas". This involves maintaining par levels as determined by usage. Replenishes, monitors, and replaces emergency medications in the emergency cart medication trays. d. Receives and processes returned excess, outdated, deteriorated, or otherwise unusable medications and supplies for return to stock, credit, or disposal.
Performs bulk compounding of routine and simple pharmaceuticals and records compounding information for quality control and AMIS data collection. Assists Pharmacist(s) in bookkeeping, filing, and maintenance of daily records for control of funds, cost of drugs, ordering drugs and supplies, security, and accountability. Performs packaging of prescriptions for mailing, which includes registered narcotics, which require special wrapping, documentation, and accountability. Assists in the training and orientation of new employees and volunteers.
Conducts monthly ward inspections in patient care areas.
Selects IV additives and containers, mixes and/or prepares IV medication using sterile techniques and sets aside for Pharmacist to check and attach label; records IV compounding and dispensing information on the compounded sterile products (CSP) log for audit trial, data collections, and quality control; delivers IVs to correct patient care area at appropriate times.
Works under the general supervision of the Pharmacy Director and more closely with the division supervisor, who assigns work in specific areas (mail out, outpatient window, pre-pack, inpatient, IVs, compounding, etc.) and under the direct supervision of any Pharmacist they are assisting. Responsible for completing work in correct and accurate form for final review by Pharmacist before dispensing. Work independently within the scope of his/her knowledge referring only unusual situations to the Pharmacist for disposition or solution.
Serves as a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certified technician (GS-06 and above), within Pharmacy Services.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Education or Experience:
(1) None required
(2) For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations. In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:
GS-03.
Education and Experience
(a) One year of post-secondary education.
OR
(b) Six months of general experience.
OR
(c) Student Technician. A student enrolled in an approved nationally accredited pharmacy technician program for an occupation identified in 38 U.S.C. 7405(a)(1)(A) or (B) may be appointed on a temporary full-time, part-time or intermittent basis under the provisions of 38 U.S.C. 7405(a)(1)(D) for a period not to exceed two years or the duration of the individual's program.
GS-04
Education and Experience:
(a) Completion of two years of post-secondary coursework related to pharmacy (e.g., 12 semester hours of science and mathematics courses).
OR
(b) Completion of one of the following:
i Six months of experience, that demonstrated knowledge of medication or medical field practice.
OR
ii Successful completion of a military or nationally recognized pharmacy technician education/training program. American Society of Health System Pharmacists® (ASHP), American Pharmacist Association (APHA), Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), PTCB or NHA are examples of acceptable professional organizations recognizing such training programs. NOTE: Training courses recognized by PTCB and NHA are not actual certifications.
OR
iii One year of experience equivalent to next lower grade level.
GS-05
Education or Experience
(a) Successful completion of four years post-secondary education with courses related to pharmacy (e.g., 48 semester hours of science, mathematics, pharmacy) or a bachelor's degree.
OR
(b) An associate's degree in pharmacy technician or technology (48 semester hours of concentrated pharmacy technician training).
OR
(c) One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
GS-06
Education or Experience:
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice.
(b) Knowledge of preparation, storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation.
(c) Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operate pharmacy dispensing equipment.
(d) Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
(e) Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel.
Preferred Experience: Preferred National certification and/or 2 years pharmacy technician experience.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-03 to GS-06.
