The Supervisory Psychiatrist - Treatment Refractory Depression (TRD) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Section functions as a section chief within Behavioral Health Service for the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. As the TRD/TMS Section Chief, the incumbent is the discipline lead and responsible for all professional aspects related to the TRD/TMS section.

Duties

FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION Serves as the senior clinician for the TRD/TMS section and assists the Chief Psychiatrist of Behavioral Health in the overall operation of TRD/TMS section within Behavioral Health Service. Develops and maintains a high-quality Behavioral Health service while meeting all VISN and VACO Environment of Care and programmatic requirements. Serves as supervisor for all staff assigned to the TRD/TMS section. Works cooperatively with the Chief Psychiatrist of Behavioral Health and other departments within VA Pittsburgh. Fosters a cohesive interdisciplinary team environment. Oversees quality control issues and performance measures with the Chief Psychiatrist of Behavioral Health. As requested, provides consultation for all Behavioral Health clinicians regarding the clinical care of complex cases. As discipline lead, the TRD/TMS Section Chief is consulted and participates in all processes that involve the discipline including, hiring of psychiatrists, professional practice concerns, disciplinary actions, and terminations. As discipline lead, the TRD/TMS Section Chief in collaboration with the Chief Psychiatrist of Behavioral Health, works to foster academic psychiatry within the Behavioral Health Service by encouraging and supporting teaching, research, publication, and other scholarly activities. Meets regularly with the Chief Psychiatrist regarding medical care provided within the Behavioral Health Service and the interface of the discipline of psychiatry with other medical specialties within the Medical Center. Serves as liaison between TRD/TMS staff and the Chief Psychiatrist of Behavioral Health Service and other members of the Behavioral Health Service leadership team to ensure ongoing communication and collaboration. Provides oversight of discipline-specific functions that cross team boundaries including the psychiatry call schedule and psychiatrist cross coverage. Serves as a mentor for junior and new hire psychiatrists. Ensures that discipline meetings occur on a regular basis. MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES The TRD/TMS Section Chief works cohesively with the Chief Psychiatrist of Behavioral Health and the Behavioral Service section chiefs to assure that all aspects of the Behavioral Health Service are functioning optimally. This includes strategic planning, setting operational priorities and deployment of resources, engaging in quality improvement, performance measure outcomes, and encouraging and improving team-oriented care for Veterans. The TRD/TMS Section Chief is a member of the senior leadership team in Behavioral Health and is involved in Behavioral Health Executive Leadership meetings. The TRD/TMS Section Chief is actively involved in discipline leadership activities with other psychiatrists and works collaboratively with other discipline chiefs within Behavioral Health. The TRD/TMS Section Chief reports directly to the Chief of Behavioral Health. The TRD/TMS Section Chief is responsible to complete all quality measures and reports as requested by VAPTH, VISN 4 and VA Central Office. The TRD/TMS Section Chief works closely with the Medical Directors of Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, Substance Abuse Treatment program, the Behavioral Health Clinic, and the Consult Liaison to assure Behavioral Health program quality and outcomes. The TRD/TMS Section Chief assists with coverage for the Chief Psychiatrist of Behavioral Health in his/her absence, which may include service as acting service chief. The TRD/TMS Section Chief sits on VAPTH Professional Standards Board, Clinical Executive Council, and Peer Review Committee if requested. The TRD/TMS Section Chief supervise and Coordinate leave and on call schedule for MDs and PAs, adjusting schedules as needed. The TRD/TMS Section Chief coordinates supervision of nurse practitioners with their Nursing supervisor. The TRD/TMS Section Chief allocates tasks for medical students and residents. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Experience with Treatment Refractory Depression (TRD) and/or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) preferred but not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to perform the above listed duties which require general overall good health, ability to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity during community outreach including walking, carrying supplies and to safely lift up to 50 lbs. Requires travel throughout the medical center and the community. Requires performing activities involving sitting, walking, standing, bending and carrying such items as books, papers and files. Necessary to travel into the community where he/she conducts interviews with the Veterans, families, representatives of community health and welfare agencies and law enforcement agencies. Must possess a current driver's license and drive a government vehicle in carrying out professional duties.

Education

1. Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
2. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
3. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
