The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Generalist is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs located in Birmingham Alabama. This position serves as an advance technician for outpatient care settings such as; primary care, mental health, and specialty clinics. As an Intermediate Care Technician, the incumbent may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), or mobile medical units.

Duties

The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) acts as a therapy tech for the Physical Medicine and Rehab Service. The ICT supports the function of the clinical program in therapy. The ICT performs the following duties with direct supervision from a therapist: Maintains cleanliness of equipment and tools by sanitizing with gloves and Saniwipes sanitizers. Maintains clinic area in an orderly fashion ensuring that area is safe and clean; maintains equipment in good working order; informs appropriate staff when items need repair/replacement; maintains loaner prosthetic stock inventory. Keeps temperature logs for hydrocollator and freezer in therapy gym. Under the direct request and supervision of a PT / PTA or OT/OTA, the incumbent may apply and / or remove hot packs, ice packs. Orient volunteers and train them to the practices that they are allowed to perform (i.e.: cleaning equipment, putting away laundry, following with a chair when therapist is gait training, running errands in the hospital, etc.). Monitor patient while performing exercises and assist with counting repetitions. Take vital signs and communicate those readings to the therapist. Deliver adaptive equipment (i.e.: walkers, canes, shower chairs, hip/knee kits, elevated commodes, long handled shower heads, etc.) to inpatients in their hospital rooms when necessary. Keep track of inventory in OT and PT supply closets and relay such levels to therapists to ensure maintenance of stock. Copy Home Exercise Programs (HEP's) and literature for patients at the requests of therapists. Create / generate educational programs / handouts for patients with the approval of the therapy supervisor (i.e.: back class handout). Uses the computer to type correspondence involving inventory level to Prosthetics Supply Clerk. Uses computer programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) for data storage and recovery, document restorative exercise sessions and to generate reports. Provides information and assessments of patients at medical staff meetings concerning the participation, progress, behavior, mental and / or physical reactions of patients assigned for treatment. Works with a regularly assigned number of patients by guiding and instructing them in a variety of exercise techniques involved in the activities of a particular field of therapy, or provides specified forms of exercise which are constant throughout the patient's treatment program or inpatient stay. Explains the treatment activity and guides patients in techniques to be used; motivates and stimulates their interest and participation in the treatment activity. Observes patients for changes in attitudes, behavior and physical condition; and assesses and reports to supervisor favorable and unfavorable changes, special problems, absences, accidents or safety hazards. Develops, implements and oversees exercise for Veterans, including documenting participation, as well as, documenting and assessing tolerance of said exercises in CPRS and VISTA. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Experience performing observation-based screening and collecting patient information, taking vital signs, conducting 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs); setting up equipment and surgical instrumentation; performing wound care such as bandaging, application of dressings and wound measurements; performing specimen collection and preparation; assisting with patient exams and screening; assisting with mental health care such as crisis intervention, behavioral/mental health screens, interviews, and observing behavioral patients; assisting with patient exams and screening; documenting actions, interventions and procedures in the medical record. OR Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successfully completed one (1) year of graduate education directly related to the position at the next lower grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (COPY OF OFFICIAL OR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED). OR Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education as described above to meet the total experience requirements for the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Only education beyond a one-half year (e.g. 6 months; 9 semester hours) of graduate level education may be used to qualify applicants for the GS-07 level. NOTE: If using education combined with specialized experience to qualify, a copy of your transcript is required. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-7. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Preferred Experience: Experience in a rehabilitation setting Safe patient handling Experience taking vital signs and monitoring patient response to exercise Medical technician experience Restorative experience Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
