The primary purpose of this position Student Trainee (Office Automation Clerk), GS-0399-04, is to provide a student trainee in the Pathways Internship Program with on-the-job training and guidance, using varied functions of multiple office automation software to produce a wide range of documents and to perform miscellaneous clerical support.
Duties
-Use varied functions of multiple office automation software to produce a wide range of documents, formats, etc.
-Prepare a wide variety of recurring correspondence, internal reports, and other documents from information obtained from the staff, files, and other sources and reviews and finalizes documents prepared by others.
-Review and process incoming and outgoing correspondence, materials, publications, regulations, and directives.
-Receive and direct telephone calls or visitors.
-Establish, update, and maintain office records of various types that may be needed or will assist in the efficient operation of the office.
Requirements
- Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying accredited institution
- Must sign a Participant Agreement
- U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
- Must be eligible to work under U.S. immigration laws
- Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
- You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
- Pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree (Junior/Senior only), Graduate or Professional Degree
- Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
- Have a good academic standing (no less than 2.95 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale)
- Meet the qualification standards of the position
- Non-citizens may be eligible for employment if Permitted by the DoD Appropriation Act
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is sedentary. May require some walking, standing, bending, carrying and/or lifting of light items like papers or books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
- WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in a typical office setting, requiring the use of normal safety precautions necessary for an office environment. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
- Position requires the skill of a qualified typist (40 wpm).
- The actual work performed in this position has been reviewed and determined that it does not meet any of the exemption criteria defined in 5 CFR 551. This position has been designated as nonexempt.
- This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program.
- Selectee is expected to be granted with and/or maintain the appropriate security clearance required for the position.
Qualifications
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity, this position may be filled at the GS-04 grade level.
OFFICE AUTOMATION AND PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT: In addition to meeting experience or education requirements, applicants must possess the skill of a qualified typist, a minimum of 40 WPM proficiency. Applicants may meet this requirement by passing the appropriate performance test, presenting a certificate of proficiency from a school of organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel Management local office or by self-certifying their proficiency in the assessment tool. NOTE: You will be considered INELIGIBLE if you do not provide information concerning your typing speed.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify for a GS-04: Completion of 2 academic years of post high school study or an associate's degree in a related field of study
FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
