This position is located within the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service at the Bessemer, AL Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) of the Birmingham VA Medical Center in Bessemer, AL. The Equipment Specialist is responsible for providing subject matter expertise in power mobility equipment, including power wheelchairs, scooters, and vehicle lifts.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Utilizing mobile/van repair responsibilities. Driving a van equipped with power mobility equipment, repair tools, and supplies to anywhere that is requested for repairs and patient contact. Troubleshooting and repairing power mobility equipment. Diagnosing problems, replacing and repairing parts, and testing equipment to ensure it is functioning properly. Managing and maintaining shop inventories. Conducting repair and maintenance clinics for power mobility equipment at the BVAMC and all corresponding CBOCs'. Providing exceptional customer service to staff, clinicians, and end-users. Addressing concerns or complaints, answering questions, including Congressional inquiries, and providing support to ensure the power mobility equipment is functioning properly. Delivering and/or picking-up power mobility devices and prosthetic stock between facilities. Performing other related duties as assigned. TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-11 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the Federal Service, that is directly related to the work of the position and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties as an Equipment Specialist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: working as a skilled mechanic or maintenance worker, sales or service engineer, or planner or estimator in a technical group dealing with manufacture, utilization, repair, or operation of power mobility equipment; reviewing and applying technical specifications and requirements; analyzing equipment and forecasting spare parts requirements; reading and interpreting engineering change orders, equipment requisitions, shop orders, and work orders; analyzing contract specifications and examining pertinent equipment to determine if specifications are met; analyzing or supervising maintenance, repair, or production operations to determine methods of improvement. Additional experience includes providing subject matter expertise in power mobility equipment, including power wheelchairs, scooters, and vehicle lifts; driving a van equipped with power mobility equipment, repair tools, and supplies to anywhere that is requested for repairs and patient contact. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree from an accredited college, or university. Such education must be directly related to the work of the position and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Electrical EquipmentProject ManagementTechnical Practices (Electrical Electronic)Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment) IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to lift and move heavy power mobility equipment, including power wheelchairs and scooters. The Equipment Specialist (Power Wheelchair Technician) must be able to stand, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods of time. The incumbent must also be able to operate a van equipped with power mobility equipment repair tools and parts. The position will be required to perform maintenance, repairs, and cleaning, which require bending and stooping for prolonged periods of time. Often lifts and carries items weighing more than 50 lbs. Occasionally works in cramped and awkward positions. A physical examination is required prior to being hired for this position.
