This position is in the Senior Executive Service (SES). Current federal civil services employees may apply. The civil service consists of all persons occupying an executive (including excepted service), judicial or legislative branch position. It does not include the uniformed services. Veteran's preference does not apply to the SES.

Duties

The incumbent is the Director of the National Institute of Corrections (NIC). The incumbent manages all programs and directs the staff of the Institute. NIC was established by the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974 under Chapter 319, Title 18 of the U.S. Code 4351 (NIC Legislation) as a leadership resource for corrections, and as an aid in the development of a more effective and humane correctional system to include prisons, jails, and residential reentry. Through professional, technical, managerial, and administrative employees, the incumbent is responsible for the development of new correctional theories and techniques, development and presentation of correctional management training programs through multiple delivery strategies (classroom, virtual instructor lead, and e-learning), providing technical assistance on corrections/penology, and the administration of a large cooperative agreement program.

Requirements

  • You will be required to travel occasionally for training and operational purposes.
  • You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.
  • After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

Qualifications

MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have demonstrated leadership skills and experience in engaging with major associations related to corrections, and experience interacting with external stakeholders on matters related to public sector correctional matters.
