This Laborer position is of a Grounds Laborer, in the Facilities Management Department at the VA Maine Healthcare System located at the Togus, ME campus location. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

The Laborer performs a large variety of duties as an assistant to the FMS Maintenance and Grounds Departments. Duties include, but are not limited to: Ability to receive written and oral instructions and complete routine work assignments independently. Required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms. Involves duties such as loading and unloading trucks. Moving office furniture, equipment, and supplies by hand or with various moving devices (e.g., dollies and/or hand trucks). Must perform duties in the safest possible manner to avoid creation of hazardous situations. Demonstrate safe and efficient operating techniques in the operation of specialized equipment. Works in assigned areas with limited supervision. Considerable latitude and independence of action is expected in handling the workload and maintaining the quality of the equipment and related systems. Work is checked for completion, accuracy and adherence to procedures and standards periodically. Qualifications

Physical Requirements: Required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods of time while working on equipment, appliances and electrical systems requiring their acute attention. The work requires frequently lifting and carrying of tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds and, less often, over 50 pounds. Laborers exert very heavy physical effort in operating large, riding mowers on grades and in areas with bushes, trees, and other visible obstacles that require significant maneuvering and lever control. Employees at this level frequently lift and move equipment and components weighing over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). The incumbent will be exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both in the winter and summer, making repairs and installations on exterior work sites. During emergency repairs, extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot, cold, slippery, wet, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped, and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to work in the vicinity of asbestos containing materials necessitating the wearing of protective clothing and breathing masks. laborers work outside in all kinds of weather, and inside in areas that may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. The equipment, tools, and tasks involved at this level frequently require extreme care and use of safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid severe injuries.
