About the Position: This position is located with the US Army Engineer District, Los Angeles, Operations Division, Operations and Maintenance Branch Arizona/Nevada Regional Unit. The position is responsible for dam operations and maintenance of dams and dam equipment across a range of geographical locations.
Duties
Maintains dam, dam site, and reservoir area in good condition.
Operates vehicles including 5 ton dump truck; a 1 ton pickup truck; a tractor; and several accessory items such as mower attachment, front end loader, backhoe, plow, disk spreader and drill.
Receives visitors at the dam sites, explaining the dams function and conducting information tours of the facilities.
Performs minor mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, concrete, and fencing at the sub-journeyman level.
Performs preventive maintenance on equipment, hydraulic systems, hoists, pumps and stand-by generator.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position is a Test Designated Position (TDP) and is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
- The employee may be required to work 12-hour shifts during emergencies. The employee may be required to maintain a government cell phone.
- This position may require the employee to wear a uniform, clothing and/or personal protective equipment supplied by the employer.
- This position requires travel to flood control dam sites, based on assignments.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Dam Operator~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform repair or maintenance work for buildings, structures and landscapes. Ability to work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Work frequently requires lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 100 pounds. Work frequently requires standing, walking, climbing, kneeling and bending. Operating equipment, vehicles and power tools requires rapid mental and muscular coordination as well as frequent arm and leg movement in manipulating gears and controls.
Working Conditions: A substantial amount of work is performed outside and involves frequent exposure to weather extremes including extreme heat and cold. Work is subject to a variety of pests and the possibility of bites from these pests and insects exist. Work is subject to unpleasant odors, blowing dust, and fumes. Subject to cuts, bruises, burns, etc. in performing maintenance and to more serious injuries when working on riprap and dam slopes. Work is subject to strain from lifting, cuts and bruises and falls from ladders. Subject to high noise levels and vibrations. Work sometimes is in close quarters and near moving machinery and electrical hazards. Occasionally in high traffic area.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
