Duties
This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), New Jersey Healthcare System (VANJHCS), Lyons campus within the Facility Management Service (FMS), Grounds Section. The primary purpose of the Engineering Equipment Operator is to perform a variety of tasks involving the operation of heavy and light grounds keeping and construction equipment.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
Excavating, grading, and moving, transporting and installation of heavy and bulky objects in addition to grounds keeping duties;
Operation of gasoline and diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment as well as equipment with wheeled traction;
Adjusts the attachments for proper level, angle, or depth, according to the work to be done and the type of equipment used;
Plans for and make the preparations needed to move, transport, or install objects or equipment without material damage, breakage, or personal injury;
Moves, stockpiles, or disposes of soil, fill, stumps, logs, and construction debris, and removes snow;
Performs work near buildings, trees, or shrubs;
Performs preventative maintenance prior to, during and after operation;
Operates dump truck and mason dump to plow snow, spread salt or sand and to transport soil, mulch, fill, asphalt, or construction debris;
Operates roller machine to smooth areas of road that are being repaired;
Operates portable air compressor and pneumatic tools associated with their use for digging and removing concrete and asphalt;
Prepares the soil for plants, seeds, thins, transplants, trims, prunes, fertilizes, aerates, mulches, sprays, and dusts grass, ground cover, flowers, shrubs, and trees; and
Operates, various pieces of small grounds maintenance equipment such as power rotary mowers, string trimmer, chain saws, snow blowers, edgers, portable generators, backpack blowers, pressure washers, portable heaters, portable air compressor and pneumatic tools associated with its use and a variety of hand tools.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires moderate to heavy physical effort with reaching, bending, turning, and moving
hands, arms, feet and legs to operate different controls on various types of equipment. Must have foot, hand, eye coordination to-handle the various controls on the vehicles. Good depth perception and high degree of concentration are required to perform necessary equipment operations. Work requires frequent bending stooping, kneeling, walking and exposure to constant vibrations and jolting caused by movement of equipment over uneven and rough terrain and running of other power tools. Position may require lifting and moving weight exceeding 50 pounds with or without assistance.
Work is performed in all types of weather, ranging from hot and humid to wet, windy and cold. Working conditions also include dust, dirt, mud, and water. Wearing of safety shoes always and personal protective equipment as required by the labels of these products is mandatory. Employee may be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85dBA for up to eight (8) hours per day. This exposure may adversely affect hearing. There is a potential for heavy equipment overturning causing injury. Wearing of hearing protection that will contain the noise level of 85dBA or below is mandatory while operating equipment. While wearing hearing protection devices, the employee must still be able to hear at a level to perform duties in a safe manner.
The position operates snow removal equipment and shall assist in snow and ice removal using hand tools and other equipment in addition to salt and chemicals of various types without injury to plant material.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must have a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement to legally operate the equipment / vehicles requiring that license. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore, please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current, valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.
