Duties
If selected for this position, you will serve as a Docketing Technician (OA) for the United States Attorney's Office, District of New Mexico. Duties will include:
Performs routine litigation support tasks necessary to process common electronically stored information (e.g., PDF files, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint files, emails, etc.) and prepare it for review or production by the litigation team.
Maintains accurate and current records regarding incoming electronic case materials, adhering to office tracking protocols, such as by completing standardized inventory or tracking forms.
Uses software applications to extract electronic case materials from storage devices or download electronic case materials from secure file transfer sites.
Organizes and prepares electronic files for processing. Uses specialized software applications to perform basic processing of common electronic files. Performs quality control on processed files and addresses any identified issues.
Builds and maintains document review databases for litigation team use. Loads image, native, or text files into document review databases; performs quality control on loaded files and addresses any identified issues.
Uses basic document review database functions such as coding, tagging, basic searching, sorting, and filtering, and advises litigation teams on these functions' use.
Generates basic electronic discovery productions (e.g., Bates-numbered images with redactions and searchable text) that comply with production specifications and deadlines, including productions from document review databases.
Provides customer support services to litigation team members relating to their use of litigation technology applications. Such services include basic troubleshooting, user assistance, and occasional basic training in response to case team needs. Assists with preparing training materials for litigation technology applications.
Works with litigation team members to understand case presentation needs. Suggests methods or software applications for presenting evidence or producing demonstrative exhibits. Creates electronic versions of exhibits for court filings, depositions, hearings, or trials.
Assists with the creation of basic demonstrative exhibits.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- If selected, you may be required to complete a one (1) year probationary period.
- Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
- You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
Qualifications
GS-05: To be qualified at the GS-05 level, you must have: at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level; or four (4) years of education above the high school level; or a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below.
Specialized Experience is defined as performing various clerical/administrative duties in support of the operation of an office; for example, reviewing documents with basic legal implications for accuracy and completeness, receiving and routing incoming mail, responding to inquiries; typing and formatting correspondence and forms; maintaining filing systems; and performing data entry within an electronic automated database system.
OR
Education: Four years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the prerequisite. One year of full-time study is defined as 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) or the equivalent or 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for 36 weeks in business, secretarial or technical school.
OR
Combination of education and specialized experience: Only education more than the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
GS-06: To be qualified at the GS-06 level, you must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level.
Specialized experience is defined as utilizing a variety of electronic case management systems and office automation programs for the purpose of developing or maintaining docketing and record-keeping; determining appropriate legal action per incoming case (for example, receiving, distributing, and closing files); performing inputting, updating and extracting of legal data, researching a variety of legal sources to obtain and/or verify information; and using automated software to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence and related materials reviewing.
GS-07:To be eligible at the GS-07 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level.
Specialized experience is defined as knowledge of rules and practices concerning administrative and legal hearings, as well a comprehensive knowledge of legal terms and definitions, and involving performing the following types of duties in a legal environment: performing diverse administrative support duties such as the entry of complex data into the electronic file and case tracking systems; utilizing knowledge of legal terminology, litigation processes and court proceedings to properly docket and identify errors in either input of documents or in the computer record; recommending revision of office procedures to improve the docketing and case management function; assisting with training new employees on the system; and producing reports from information within the database.
