This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veteran Health Administration, Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), at Durham VA Medical Center, Durham, NC in the Mechanical Section of Engineering Service. The primary purpose of this position is to install, repair and maintain the piping and plumbing systems throughout the medical center.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Working from blueprints, plans, sketches and other specifications the incumbent plans lay-outs and fabricates piping systems in relation to walls, passageways, obstructions, locations of machinery and other considerations. Systems may include those which supply gases and fluids for engineering machinery, for plumbing, and special purpose equipment such as found in hospitals, clinics, laundries, galley, housing, industrial buildings and facilities. Bores holes in structures through which piping must pass, installs pipes with necessary hangers, brackets and other necessary support, aligning for welding, soldering and brazing where required otherwise gauges, traps, thermostats, back-flow preventer units and other devices and connects pipe to fixtures and equipment. Packs and adjusts and repairs valves of various types. Repairs leads and clears obstructions in piping and makes necessary adjustments for proper operation under pressure. Operates pipe threading machines, hand tools, electric sewer augers, fans, pumps and other trade-related tools and equipment. Perform other related duties as assigned that are necessary in meeting the needs of the Medical Center. Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD02495A Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized Physical Requirements: May handle or carry weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally more. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier material and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capacities for working inside and outside in excessive heat and cold, excessive noise, confined areas inclement weather and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces that can be found at or in transit to or from worksites. Must be able to work from ladders and platforms and work in awkward and uncomfortable positions. Working Conditions The incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents ae present. These agents may include physical and chemical agents ae present. These agents my include, but are not limited to; fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examination to assess his or her medical qualification for duty involving work with these agents.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
