Duties

As an Supervisory Research Industrial Hygienist you will: Serve as research supervisor responsible for providing scientific leadership during the planning, directing and execution of the activities and services of one of the teams involved in the disciplinary areas of occupational respiratory research. Develop, in conjunction with his/her supervisor, an affirmative action plan for employees that are supervised including appropriate objectives and goals; and monitors and periodically assesses progress. Responsible for the technical quality and quantity and timeliness of work produced by subordinates; mentoring team members on the application of research theories and practices, and - based on scientific rigor - accepting or rejecting material presented by Team scientists Lead scientists or is independently responsible for design and interpretation of applied and complex operational research studies and develop appropriate recommendations for further research. Formulate, develop, and direct broad programs of active research in separate stages in industrial hygiene and epidemiological studies, clinical assessment, exposure assessment, and laboratory research.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following experience: in personally conducting and leading efforts to plan, design and execute research studies and formulate and implement laboratory and field research associated with occupational respiratory diseases. Research Position: An evaluation of the scientific contributions, recognition and professional standing of the researcher as they relate to the position being filled will be made to determine qualifications. Candidates should include all pertinent information regarding their research accomplishments, e.g. list of publications and presentations. Documenting Experience: In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. It is expected that this documentation is included in the employee's official personnel record. In order to receive credit for experience in your resume that is not within the official series and grade level of your official position, you must provide a copy of the appropriate documentation of such experience as indicated above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements.
