This position is located within Engineering Service at the Audie L. Murphy Division of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio, TX.

Duties

Major Duties: Exercises responsibility for maintaining, repairing, modifying, testing, inspecting, analyzing for defects, troubleshooting and eliminating malfunctions on all non-medical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigerated equipment. Installs, recognizes the cause of faulty equipment and makes repairs on the complete systems that provide a variety of air-conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering air including refrigeration systems, therapeutic pool systems, exhaust fans, water treatment systems, solar panels, and central plant systems including medical air and vacuum, shop and control air, steam supply, heat exchangers, and economizers on the domestic water and building heat systems and all circulating pumps. Repairs and installs the following: water chillers, dehydrators, heat exchangers, water softeners, ice machines, walk in and reach in refrigerators/freezers, large and small fan units, all types of air, moving equipment, pneumatic systems, electric and electronic control systems, complex research-type refrigerated equipment, drinking fountains, and air conditioning distribution systems. Assis biomedical technicians as needed by making repairs to the refrigerated portions of patient or laboratory equipment. Installs or replaces pipes and ducts where the areas to be conditioned are a considerable distance from the compressor. Works on a variety of methods of air conditioning such as mechanical compression or chilled water. Performs other related duties as assigned. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Must wear appropriate safety gear including full-face and half-face respirators when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerant or a health hazard such as tuberculosis. Works from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, motorized high lift, as well as other hard to reach places. Stands, stoops, bends, nails, crawls, climbs, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Because the equipment in the air handling system is usually larger and must be maneuvered into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling, the incumbent frequently lifts and carries tools, parts, equipment, and material that weigh up to 50 pounds and less often up to 40 pounds. Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weighs up to 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Subject to be exposed to disagreeable fumes, work in oily or greasy areas, exposed to burns, cuts, bruises, electrical shock, and low environmental temperatures and possible exposure to live steam. Occasionally required to work outside, on top of tall buildings, and in hot or cold cramped crawl spaces with low overhead. This position requires being medically cleared and fit-tested for a respirator. Incumbent will be placed on the hospital's respirator fit-testing program. Works on systems that are large and where refrigerants are used in larger amounts, and therefore is subject to larger amounts of escaping gases when making emergency repairs. Subject to cut, scrapes, splinters and burns due to the tools and materials used. Subject to dirt, dust, spray, fumes, and odors from accomplishing job.
