This position is for the In-house Projects Team of the Engineering Section/Service Line at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Maintenance Mechanic has skill in the s responsible to perform a wide range of duties at the journeyman level for the following trades : Carpentry / Masonry / Painting. Experience consists of experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment in industrial or institutional buildings.

Duties

Using knowledge and application of electrical principles, materials, and safety standards; using a variety of test equipment, hand, and power tools of the trade; reading and working from blueprints, drawings, or other specifications; and adhering to all safe working practices. Applicants need skills in various trades such as electrical, utility systems such as air conditioning, heating, water, wastewater, etc., building construction, and carpentry. Layout floor covering such as vinyl tile, carpet tile, sheet materials, prep area surfaces and lay out patterns. Recognize and select appropriate lumber type and grade, make rough sketches, estimate cost, time and materials of carpentry projects. Knowledge of geometry and algebra to plan, measure and lay out projects involving the construction, alteration, repair or modification. Determine work requirements and sequence of masonry/tile assignments through review of work orders, plans or drawings. Knowledge of residential and commercial/industrial practices and processes of the painting trade. Apply coating techniques to insure surfaces meet, match, texture, decorative, thickness and level requirements; utilizes enhanced finishing skills. Knowledge of proper methods of trenching, grading, excavating and demolition activities. Planning and laying out work, tracking hard-to-locate defects or problems, and completing repairs and installations. Locating defective parts/equipment through visual observation or through the use of test equipment (e.g. test lamps, voltage testers, ammeters). Possess knowledge of electrical systems and equipment, such as series, parallel, compound circuits and wiring systems in industrial complexes and buildings. Knowledge of accepted pipe-fitter trade practices, methods, techniques, measurement and layout Adjusting equipment controls such as temperature sensors, thermostats, and leak detectors. Working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and layout the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Receiving written instructions, in person instructions, and wiring diagrams that indicate the nature of the repair or installation to be made, the layout and placement of circuitry, fixtures, and controls, and the types of wiring, parts, and equipment installed. Working from building blueprints and sketches to plan and lay out jobs for safe and efficient operation. Assisting other engineering personnel in interpreting blueprints, setting critical temperature controls, and providing instruction/training as needed. Operating and using hand and power tools such as saws, hammers, drills, routers, planes, power nailers, glue guns, sanders, power saws, etc. Operating aerial trucks and associated equipment. Operating and using a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specification. Using various types of power sources with various combinations or pulleys, belts, horse power capacity, and tensioners. Removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures. Using a variety of complicated motor controls to protect against overload or overheating. Locating broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD01872A Physical Requirements: Makes repairs and installations using ladders, scaffolding, in crawl spaces, and on platforms, where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets up parts, tools, and equipment that weigh up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Occasionally, lifts and carry items that weigh over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Working Conditions: Inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where fumes are present and or require oxygen level verification. The incumbent is occasionally in small and confined spaces. The incumbent may need to wear a respirator or a positive air pressure respirator. Frequently exposed to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions, live steam, equipment in operation with moving parts and hot pipes. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. The incumbent is routinely subjected to the possibility of electrical shock. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. The incumbent may also work in areas known to contain asbestos.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
