This position is located in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Located on New York City's Museum Mile, in the historic Carnegie Mansion and Garden, Cooper Hewitt is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. Duties

The Museum Technician is a critical member of the Registrar team, carrying out the art handling duties for the museum and its off-site storage in Newark, New Jersey.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factor: Ability to handle objects safely and efficiently, with an understanding of the materials that make up objects within a design museum collection and how these materials may react with installation or packing materials. Experience: GS-07: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as installation/de-installation of art objects for exhibitions, independently handling art objects for exhibitions and loans, and preparing purchase orders, loan agreements and condition reports.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Or Education: One full academic year of related graduate level education or superior academic achievement.Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.
