These Intermediate Care Technician positions are in the Primary Care service at the Boston VA Healthcare System, and locations are:
Brockton, MA; Jamaica Plain, MA; Lowell, MA; West Roxbury, MA.
These positions are full-time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Generalist serve as an advance technician for outpatient care settings such as; primary care, mental health, and specialty clinics. As an ICT Generalist the incumbent may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), mobile medical unit or may have virtual/remote assignments.
ICTs performs ongoing patient care duties in an outpatient clinical setting. ICTs perform tasks in accordance with local policies after documented completion of training and demonstration of appropriate skills and competency. These tasks are not all inclusive and require the demonstration of appropriate training and documented competence prior to their performance. May assist with or perform other related approved technical health care procedures under the direction and supervision of the licensed personnel as competency is demonstrated and documented.
Duties include but are not limited to;
Knowledge of major body systems.
Working knowledge of topographic anatomy.
Working knowledge of diagnostic signs.
Knowledge of protocol-approved list of medications.
Knowledge in communication techniques and the operation of communications equipment.
Working knowledge of isolation techniques and universal precautions.
Working knowledge to assist licensed personnel in the examination of patients and performs the full range of care in accordance with established protocols, training, and competency under the direction of the licensed staff.
Working knowledge of the components of suicide risk assessment, warning signs, environmental safety and referral.
The incumbent provides treatment and interventions as directed by the licensed staff for a wide range of patient conditions.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, Tour of duty will be negotiated with supervisor.

These positions are in the Competitive Service.

Interchange Agreements with Other Merit System: Employees who occupy medical or medical-related positions and were appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) [formerly 38 U.S.C. 4104 (1) and (3)] must be serving in a full-time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year in this other merit system to be eligible to convert to the Title 5 System. Some exceptions to this rule may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment.
Current Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.
These are AFGE and NAGE Bargaining Unit positions.
These positions are covered by locality-based comparability pay.
The incumbent may be required to travel to other VA Boston campuses and CBOC's.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/01/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
- AND - In addition to meeting the English Language Proficiency, to qualify at the GS-7 level, applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:
GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
Practical knowledge of the major body systems.
Patient Screening
Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting
Assisting outpatient licensed staff with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations.
Follow up Care
Specimen Collection
Wound Care
Equipment & Surgical Instrumentation set up
Perform patient examination and to provide prompt and efficient patient care and appropriate patient handling.
Broad knowledge of equipment and supplies to adequately anticipate the demands of providers in multiple sub-specialties.
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Graduate education or an internship that meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (Transcripts required)

Physical Requirements: The work requires some moving and transporting of light items such as supplies, papers, books, trays and equipment on a regular and recurring basis. Long periods of moving about the work unit. Regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting and repositioning patients, or similar activities. Also, ability to physically control or defend against emotionally ill patients.
