Employee will serve as a Recreation Assistant at the VA Medical Center, Detroit, MI, working to implement the objectives of the Integrative Health Coordinating Center and the VHA Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation. Employee is responsible for providing Tai Chi and/or Qigong instruction for the purpose of promoting, restoring, and preserving health and wellbeing of veterans at the facility and supporting additional recreational activities
Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Prepares and sets up Tai Chi and/or Qigong setting and equipment to support scheduled events and activities.
Conducts Tai Chi and Qigong well-being classes, either group or individual, for the purpose of promoting, preserving, and restoring health and well-being.
Develops marketing requests and advertising efforts for special event to encourage participation in Tai Chi and/or Qigong programs.
Recommends additions, deletions, or changes to facility rules and operating procedures.
Works independently when addressing a variety of Tai Chi and/or Qigong related administrative problems or situations.
Conducts regular inventories of equipment and supplies including educational materials.
Compiles, prepares, and submits records, reports, and requests concerning participation, material and equipment purchases, and inventories.
Provides simple accurate instruction in the areas of Tai Chi and/or Qigong such as verbal, kinesthetic, or visual cues to correct body alignment during various movements.
Prepares class format and content appropriate for the type of class and level of participants.
Adapts Tai Chi and/or Qigong protocols to match patient's ability, physical and mental limitations.
Records attendance at classes in medical records, noting any precautions or clinically relevant outcomes.
Serves as a consultant to leadership on issues surrounding Tai Chi and/or Qigong.
Acts as a mentor to Tai chi and/or Qigong teacher trainees as needed.
Participates in creating new Tai Chi and/or Qigong classes and clinics when requested.
Performs other related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:30am - 6:00pm

Qualifications
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. This also includes experience leading Tai Chi and/or Qigong classes for well-being and maintenance of health. OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Successful completion of six months of graduate education, or an internship directly related to the work of the position. OR
COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Combination of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education as described above to meet the total experience requirements.
NOTE: The facility prefers applicants who are certified in Tai Chi instructor Level 1 or equivalent (150 documented hours of formal Tai Chi training); or Level 1 Qigong instructor certified by the National Qigong Association (or equivalent).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: The work requires considerable exertion in order to perform the assigned duties.
IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
