The position is at the Richmond VA Medical Center in the Nursing Service. The incumbent reports directly to the Nurse Manager in the Interventional Procedure Clinics aligned under Perioperative Nursing Service. The incumbent participates with the Urology team in planning and implementing a variety of complex medical, technical, and diagnostic procedures under the general supervision of the Urology Providers and Registered Nurses (RNs) in the Urology and Minor Procedure Clinics.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Observes and responds promptly to patients requiring immediate urologic examination and treatment within scope of practice and ensures prompt attention from the RN and or Urology Provider. Performs room turnover between patients as per Infection Control guidelines and ensures supplies available for subsequent clinic appointment. Performs screening and diagnostic studies including voiding trials, bladder ultrasound for post void urination (USPVR), and post void catheterization (PVR) in both males and females. Assist urology providers and RN in performance of urologic procedures on the urethra: dilation of strictures, biopsy of lesions, placement of catheters, urethroscopy; procedures of the urinary bladder including cystoscopy, cystoscopy with biopsy/fulguration, placement of suprapubic catheters; procedures on the ureter including stent placement, ureteral washing for cytology; procedures on the prostate including prostate gland ultrasounds/biopsies. Performs medical record review for previous exams and other pertinent information prior to schedule exam Incumbent performs the following radiographic procedures, limited to radiography specific to urology in the clinic. Using aseptic technique, prepares, organizes, and maintains sterile field and surgical instrumentation during the procedures. Prepares soiled instrumentation for decontamination by performs proper pre-cleaning of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) in accordance with VHA Sterile Supply Services (SPS) Directive. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/30/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-08 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade of GS-08 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: assisting with clinical workflow; receive and prepare patients for urological procedures/examinations; maintain records; assisting with collection, handling, and transport of specimens; assisting medical staff with performing diagnostic procedures; selecting the correct instruments for a procedure, passing medical instruments and materials to medical/health professionals for a variety of diagnostic tests and procedures; assisting with health care procedures (such as prostatic/dermal biopsies, cystoscopy, prostate ultrasound, and urodynamics and any other clinical procedure required); operation of c-arm for fluoroscopy procedures/examinations; advance knowledge of medical terminology, providing clerical and administrative support; pre-treatment, transportation, and storage of Reusable Medical Equipment/Devices (RME/D); notifying physician of test results. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 1 full year of graduate level education. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond undergraduate level education. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience requirement only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Physical demands involve regular and recurring physical exertion, It involves long periods of regular and recurring standing (up to 8 hours), frequently walking, bending, pushing, lifting, reaching and stretching to set up and provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the providers. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to providers without compromising principles of aseptic techniques and in a manner requiring little or no effort form the provider. Patients must often be assisted in movement and heavy machinery must often be moved (lifting and moving greater then 40 lbs.). The pace of effort is frequently non-stop as the demands for health care for this sector of patients is increasing.
