You will serve as a MARINE MACHINERY MECHANIC in the Mechanical Shop )Code 930) Production Resources Department Manager (Code 901), Production Resources Department (Code 900) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will install, adjust, set, and repair or replace various controls and regulation of safety devices such as meters, gages, valves, switches, and automatic alarms. You will perform on-the-site machining of parts. You will use various portable machine tools, such as seal weld cutting machines, portable milling machines, facing machines, and drills. You will read from blueprints, sketches, and specification in determining critical dimensions and key reference points.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION Experience providing on the job training and correct improper mechanical work methods, overhauling and repairing marine machinery while ensuring safe work practices; and diagnosing problems on marine machinery. Demonstrating proper work methods; seeing that plans, materials, and tools are available; assuring that safety and housekeeping rules are followed. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. Experience with layout, install, overhaul, repair, and maintain various types of marine machinery equipment and/or components , assuring the timely and efficient completion of all work assignments, rebuilding, refurnishing, or replacement of worn or damaged parts, demonstrating proper work methods; seeing that plans, materials, and tools are available; assuring that safety and housekeeping rules are followed. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection. Experience working from blueprints, technical manuals, sketches and/or specifications using shop math, trade theories, industrial practices and associated background subjects in calculating needed material, using machine tools for onsite milling, grinding, machining, facing, boring, and/or drilling, along with the use of various portable machines to be able to successfully complete work assignments. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
