Duties

As a Licensed Independent Provider, the Nurse Practitioner or Mid-Level {pick one} practices autonomously and in coordination with health care professionals and other individuals. The incumbent provides a wide range of health care services, including the diagnosis and management of acute, chronic and complex health problems; health promotion; disease prevention; health education; and counseling to individuals, families, groups and communities. Must be an excellent communicator and team player who is adaptable to the needs of a growing medical center. Incumbent is a qualified advanced practicing provider (APP) who serves as a provider of outpatient specialty care of patients in the outpatient pulmonary clinic, including telemedicine, as well as inpatients, in the Miami VA Healthcare System. They are responsible for the continuing management of assigned patients. This includes but is not limited to physical examination and treatment, coordination of medical care with other subspecialists, social worker, data manager, pharmacist, dietitian, nursing and other personnel as member of a multidisciplinary team. They also provide comprehensive treatments. Maintains an active knowledge of the patient care processes of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the medical center and its clinics. An essential element is active knowledge of the medical records system (CPRS). This shall include using the computerized medical record system for progress notes, orders, and medical record review and completion of such records in a complete and timely manner. The incumbent shall have knowledge of and abide by Medical Center Bylaws, VHA Rules and Regulations and have a familiarization with existing VA specific clinical guidelines as well as Medical Service rules, regulations and policies. The incumbent fulfills the requirements for employment and credentials as determined by the Miami VA Healthcare System. This shall include mandatory and continuing educational requirements and maintaining active licensure and national certification as an APP from a state(s) in the US. The incumbent must demonstrate continuing effort to keep abreast of new medical developments and medical literature. The responsibility to complete timely license renewal, credentials and national certification remains with the APP. The qualified APP should have experience in the evaluation and management of pulmonary nodules/lung masses. The qualified APP will have prior work experience and knowledge in the care of pulmonary disease including COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension. This would include an understanding of Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) interpretation as well as CT and PET scan interpretation. APRNs may participate in Home Oxygen clinical care and coordination, APRNs may also work in the role of Lung Cancer Screening Coordinator. As dictated by the needs for the service. Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Ensures that high-quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner. Evaluate, diagnose and manage patients with pulmonary symptoms and diseases. Review and screen consult requests for scheduling and to facilitate patient care. Order appropriate testing as indicated to expedite comprehensive evaluation of patients at time of consultation. Knowledge and use of database tracking system for patients with suspicious lung nodules. Complies with VHA regulations and professional standards and ethical conduct. Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life. Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences, and the application of their knowledge to patient care and the education of others. Ensure practice-based learning and improvement, practitioners are expected to be able to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Master's or Doctoral Degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission (ACEN-Formerly NCLAC) or the Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Nurse Practitioners must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires moderate lifting up to 44 lbs., carrying objects up to 15 lbs., frequent reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, hands and legs, use of cranes and motor vehicles, walking & standing up to 8 hours, bending and climbing and able to hear whisper. The incumbent must be physically, emotionally and mentally stable in order to efficiently perform the essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others.
