This position will operate within the Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) program at the VA Bedford Health Care System. The Motor Vehicle Operator provides transportation to Veterans and their spouses who lived in areas of the Bedford VA Medical Center and surrounding satellite clinics catchment areas. Locations: Jamaica Plains, MA West Roxbury, MA Brockton, MA

Duties

The major duties include but are not limited to: Provides non-emergent, safe transportation of eligible Veterans and cargo; Operates and provides preventative maintenance for patient transport vehicles; Makes the first contact with patients and is responsible for making the first positive impression; Interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day; Ensures only eligible Veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center or satellite clinic and returned to their respective pick-up locations; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Full-time or Part-time positions available.Work schedule varies depending on agency need. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: May be authorized for highly qualified candidates NOTE: For part-time positions (20 hours per pay week), benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance. DRIVER'S LICENSE (SCREEN OUT): A current, valid, unrestricted, state-issued driver's licenseis required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package; however, you may be required to bring a copy of your license if you are contacted for an interview. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
